A ClCTer Exploit.
Captaix BuEKowSjOf the steam
er Rio Grande, has succeeded in
accomplishing an unprecedented
feat "When his steamer was
discovered "to be on fire at sea,
nine miles beyond the Delaware
breakwater, ho overhauled an
Italian bark, the Beppino A, suc
cessfully and safely, and, without
the slightest panic, transferred his
ninety-seven passengers to her,
navigated the burning vessel to a
bhoal near the breakwater and
sank her to the deck beams. This
was the only means of putting
out the fire, which was in the hold
of the ship among eight hundred
bales of cotton. It was impossi
ble to reach the fire on the Rio
Grande or to successfully battle
with it in the usual way by pour
ing water through the hatches.
To completely submerge nil of the
steamer below the main deck
hatches was the only lecoursc.
To accomplish this without serious
injury to tho steamer was no
easy tiMc. . But Captain Bur
rows managed it in twenty-seven
hours after the conflagration was
discovered, and not only this, but
in twenty-four hours more he had
extinguished the flames, pumped
out and raided the ship and was
once iirain readv to start the en
gines and steam for New York. At
the Delaware breakwater the Rio
Grande again overhauled the Ital
ian bark, xetransferred the passen
gers to the cteamer and resumed
the voyage to New York with the
steamer as sound as a dollar and
no other injury e.ecpt to the
cariro.'"
JMdrotone Light house.
Tm: Ivldystone lihthou.e, of
wonderful history, started on a new
raioor last week. Seaton's fam
ous structure, erected over 100
years ago, has been replaced by a
higher, stronger and more modern
structure, which its architect,
Douglass, believes, good for more
than another hundred years. The
first lighthouse on Eddvstone icef
was built of wood and stone in
1C90, and was carried away by
the ea only seven years later. Tho
i-ecQiid one, built in the same man
ner in 1 70S, was binned in 1755.
Then followed Swcaton's work of
ait, which is i-till standing. But
it was found about live years ago
that although the tower was still
sound, the ledge on winch it stood
had become undei mined by the
waves, and there was danger
of an ultimate collapse. Tho
new lighthouse stands on another
part of tho ledge, one that at high
tide is always below the surface
Tho lower part of tho tower which
is bolted securely to the bed-rock,
is a cylinder 44 feet in diameter
and 22 feet high, the top of it,
being 2 feet 6 inches above high
water of spring tides. Here,
therefore is a landing stage. From
this baso springs a tapering tower
35 feet in diameter at the base and
, eighteen feet at tho top, which is
138 feet above "the roek founda
tion. The lantern room has two
oil lamps of 722-candie power
together, and the lange of the
flash is 17 nautical miles. Tho
lighthouse is of granite through
out, and tho formal "opening" was
the lighting of, the lamps on the
jvTgbtfbf tlioir use bv the Prince
s4of Wales.
As Usual.
The Polaris editor has made
another discevery: Ever since he
got mixed up on the two St. Louis
papers, and couldn't tell which
. -itvas JKepublican and which was
Democrat, he has let up on polics,
..buthore he goes on u now tack:
"The revolution in Ireland offers
a splendid pretext for a large im
migration to Ainciica, without tho
risk of exciting alarm, or causing
investigation.'1
Inasmuch as the Irish have
"been cqraing, here for the last
eighty yeari without any need or
jxaEUJWT'jaEj
xcuso for "pretext," ao d further
masinucn as they were never in
"" immoers m uronnrr.inn
to
former immigration statistics than
at present:, the discovery of our
gelid contemporary is hardly in
strict accordance with existing
facts. Possibly the stern rule of
Bismarck is the "pretext" that
those dreadful fellows the Ger
mans have for their audacity in
coming over by the hundred thou
sand this vear.
The present strike in the state
of Ohio and Illinois has thrown
sixty thousand men out of employ
ment. On the basis of five per
sons to each striker, this would
indicate that oGO.OOO people arc
directly affected by tho strike.
