iiy Ordinance No. 1."9, on each of
were men who toiled across the
plains in the long and weary march
that will never be repeated. Hard
ship disciplined them into fit and
worthy founders of a great state,
and severe toil taught them the
value of money. Educating their
sons as best they could, at the cost
of many a personal sacrifice, they
lived to see them grown up to use
ful lives and forming a powerful
element in the state's progress.
The bench and bar of the metropo
lis teems with the scions of men
who, thirty years ago, bore into
this deep solitude .the ax in one
hand and the bible in the other.
Out of this severe school of ad
versity sprung a rugged element
of men fit to copo with any other
race in the battle of life. The dis
cipline of poverty that reared Gar
field from the canal boat to the
presidency, will in the future ele
vate to hiffh honors voting men
who have toiled up the same ardu
ous path from obscurity and pen
ury to wealth and power. The
long, cold rainy winters that wit
nessed the hard struggles of ths
men who lived on salt salmon and
cracked wheat for seven years, de
veloped a high order of energy
and personal courage.
The last three centuries bhow
that neariv all the master minds of
the world cpme from the upper
temperate zone; and the vigor of
the northern brain to-day gives
new vigor to the tired and languid
world. The Italy that gave to the
world a Galileo and a Columbus,
has failed to produce their dupli
cates. In the mean time, the Gal
lic races have sprung to the fore
and, by their progress in the
coarser arts, havo advanced the
world as the brush of Titian or
the chisel of Praxiteles never could
have done.
California is semi-tropical in her
climate. Oregon has none of it
Sho has the humid air of England
and her sons and daughters have
the look of transplanted English
men. The future years of her
power in the list of great produc
ing states, will see a race of lusty
men spring from this very cradle
of early hardship, leading every
enterprise conducive to the devel
opment of our country and the en
lightenment of her people, realiz
ing the wisdom of the old Latin
maxim, "A sound mind in a sound
body." The discipline of poverty
in the early fifties will be manifest
in the prosperity which witnesses
the close of the present century in

Thc Plague of House Flies.
Some paper in Oregon notices
the fact that so far this year there
have been no houso flies to bother,
and that it is premonition of sick
ness or epidemics. These torments
are scavengers and no doubt that
without them in the economy of
nature we would suffer. Wo have
sometimes heard the question tsk
ed as to where the fly comes from,
and how propagated. For out
own satisfaction wo have investi
gated it and give it to our readers:
The eggs are about four-hundred
ths of an inch long, one-fourth
as wide, dull in white color, and
pitted with elongate, hexagonal
depressions mere whitish specks
to tho unaided eye, laid iu little
agglutinated piles in warm ma
nure or in decomposing vegeta
tion, especially about our stables
and barn yards. From 80 to 100
are laid at a time, and probably at
three to four different intervals by
the same fly, though on this point
we have no exact data. Within
one of our ordinary darkeys.
During the cold weather thev beg
a good deal, but when the .sum
mer coincs these people, in their
rags, with whis-ky in their heads,
and tobacco in their mouths, are
as independent as a candidate for
office after his election. Black-
berries and other fruit of wild
growth they flood the market with, '
and they then reap the cash, and
are as saucy as they make tliein. J
