Monday's Election.
Ik another column will he iVand
fall returns from Clatsop county, I
compiled from the official canvass
which closed at two o'clock yester
day afternoon. The vote on some
candidates was so 'close that noth
ing but an official count eouid de
termine who were buccessful. In
the btate nothing further has been
developed thau the Republican
majorities are augmented, and
that that party will-have fifty votes
votes out of the ninety in the next
legislature thus electing Mitchell
when the time conies.
I Both Sides of the Coinaihia.
In a lengthy communication re
ferring to our lapsed railroad grant
in this county, a Pacific county,
W. T., subscriber sets forth the un
just discrimination and privileges
.allowed the railroad companies in
our sister Territory, and in con
clusion, says:
"We, too, are. cursed with an
indemnity grant ten miles in width,
from the Columbia river to the
Straits of Fuca. Xo man can get
a home on this vast tract of land;
which has now lain nine years
waiting for the railroad company
to select such as they want of it.
They don't select any faster than
they sell, because they don't like
to pay taxes on their land, like
other good citizens whom the law
compels. One might think the
law was crooked enouh when
equal taxation is a failnie; but
they don't want to pay taxes, and
for this reason, poor men hunting
for homes come and go year after
year, from a land unsettled, un
used and untaxed; ftom.a laud
where those "who' have been lucky
enough to get homestead';, would
be glad to have them settle. Iut
the great" fiat of money-made law,
says: fstand bad; you poor j
fool, stand back; wait, you back- j
woodsmen, wait; ami they have;
waited; without a home, without

people as my old grandfather ustl
to call them, can turn the political
sausage mill and eat the . stale
. hash of dead issues any longer
without vomiting, I say give us a
king, whom we can idolize and
serve, instead of moneyed power
that we are obliged to obey. But
I still have faith to believe that
the" "sovereign people" will take
up these questions for the people,
'because the inalfenable light to
liberty. depends so much upon the
equal chances to maintain life, that
a free government cannot exist
long after, the average chances
which nature affords are destroyed
and made unequal by law.'
Affairs in Alakn.
A cOEunsPOXDENT of the Bulle
tin, writing from Sitka, says:
"The arrival and departure of
the mail steamer is the one great
event in the lives of the citizens.
For days previous to its arrival her
position on the route is considered
a subject for serious discussion, and
lonq and earnest debates in regurd
to the particular locality in which
she may b5 at that moment are in
dulged in. The steamer is the one
link that reminds that we are mem
bers of the greatest and busiest
country in the world, although so
far away from that seat of govern
ment. Each month we catch but
the echo of what is being done in
the outer -world. Nations make
peace and war, grave question of
international policy are brought on
the tapis, and we rgad history iu
newspapers and letters rather than
current events. Living at the
ultima thulc of the great republic,
nevertheless we feel that we are
individuals in the millions that
constitute its population, and our
hopes, aspirations and ambitions
are bound "up in the history of our
common country.
Til-very month the papers are
eagerly scanned in. hopes of see
ing some recognition of our -rights
as American citizens on ibc part'
of a tardv Congress, and each!
