We s-catce-ly need mention Ueaconsfield, who died at 7o, and might have liyed fifteen years longer, except for those terrible east winds which sweep down upon the coast of England laden with the moisture of the North sea, the icy, chill of Spitzenbergen, and the snowy terrors of Lapland. Not only have these men lived long, not only do they stili live long, but, as remarked, they show much less bias toward insanity in then old nge than in the callow period of youth. It is not of recoid that the po litical occupation has hitherto ten-! ded so far to unbalance the mind and so bring individnals within the walls of insane asylums. There have been exceptions, but they have been rare, and it has always been discovered that it was some eo-operating cause, and not poli tics itself, which produces the intellectual aberration. Vo would not wish to say that because relig ion often tends to insanity it were bettor to bo a politician than a Christian, but we do venture lo assert that in proportion to the numbers employed, politics, which is by no means a lofty calling, shows, man for man, less lunatics than the trades of bricklayer, hodcarrier, carpenter, street car driver, hotel clerk, machinist or beerjerker. We aie therefore, surprised to learn that George N. Bliss, a Hhodo Island Senator, has been made insano by tho excite ment attending an election, which, according to tho telegram, occur red two years ago. The statement that he "violently abuses the minister," and can only bo ''paci fied by tho minister's wife." makes us fear either a religious or a social complication. Still, taking the facts as badly stated, we are tempt ed to inquire what kind of a tein-pest-in-a-teapot insanity this mid summer madness of tho honorable Senator is? If Rhode Island woie half as large as an average Cali fornia county, we could better understand why his intellect should have failed him at this juncture.
