To-morrow the voters of the Btate will elect the men of their choice for the state and several county governments. The lack of any prominent issue between the two great parties has had the effect of. making the contest compara tively tame, but it has served a good jiurpose in this way, viz: no one is blinded or dazzled by the glare of party gas or political pyrotechnics. Every man in the state of Oregon has his mind fully made up this morning as to just how he will vote, and wo believe it is a matter of honest conviction with him as to who aro the best ' men to fill the offices. "We are glad to. note that so far as this county is concerned, the contest has "Ibeen decently conducted. It is with sincero pleasure we say this, for we believe that in no county in Oregon or on the coast that polls such a vote as Clatsnp county .does is there less skull duggery, among the candidates. We think that among the names submitted for the consideration of voters in the columns of Tun AsToniAX for the last four weeks there. is the material for a set - of first-class county official", and shall only repeat what we have said before, that the possession of a vote is such a grand privilege, that it should only be exercised after reflection, and in accordance with the same judgment and com mon sense that govern all of us in our every da business transac tions.' - - MISCELLANEOUS. rjutcd without a knowledge of tho statistics collected by tho census bureau, and yet, two years after the taking of tho census, theso statistics are not generally avail able, and when they aro officially published they will already be stale. It is purely a business transaction. Our votes are recorded by men we pay for that service. When the sun goes down the votes are counted, and which ever side has the biggest tally list, is declared to be the" winner. The de feated,, candidates feel a littlo sore for a 'few days, when they remember haw poorly promises and aotiona" agree, but they get over that, and everything goes on ' as usual. The lotus-eating officials who have charge of tho publication of tho census returns are unmoved by any considerations of this kind. Their pay depends, not upon the public demand, but upon the i!e lay in getting out the work, wlio.-e appearance cuts off the salarj. This is not the worst. "While the census itself is not forthcoming, though paid for with millions of the people's money, copyright J books, compiled from the census returns and prepared by persons connected with the census, arc forthcoming, and the sale of these books depends upon the delay in the-publication of the official cen sus returns. The amount of money these enterprising gentlemen makes is in direct proportion to the time they can stave off tho returns that were taken ton years ago. As 1 is to 24, so is their profit to X. Increasing tho sec ond term augments the value of the unknown quantity. This may not be rascality; it may be only procrastination; but it has a very ! ugly look all the same. The new wheat from Columbia basin will prob ably be ready for shipment July loth, only a month and a half iroin now, while the "Willamette Valley crop will be ready one month later.
