At a meeting of the Republican
precinct committee at noon yesterday,
T. B. Bndwell was placed in nomina
tion for constable of this precinct. It
was,in tho discretion of tho committee,
doemed best to make no nomination
for justico of the peace, and tho com
mittea adjourned to meet at tho call
of the chairman,
Democratic Rally.
Wheu C. H. Stockton, the chair
mau of tho meeting, introduced Hon.
W. T. Burnoy last evening it was to a
fairly filled house. 3Ir. Burney was
listened to for forty-fivo minutes, and
was followed by Sir. V. K.
Strode, who began by allusion to tho
present campaign and his pleasuro at
meeting interested audiences at every
point, and thought that tho statemeut
of his Republican friends, that tho
Democratic party was a dead or dying
party, was not warranted by what ho
believed to be the facts. In support
of this, he cited Ihc fact that in 1876
Samuel J. Tilden received 4,235,992
votes, being a majority of the popular
voteof 145,911, and that in 1880 Han
cock got 4,444,952 vote3, being within
9,404 votes of the number Garfield re
ceived. He thought that a part' that
could make such a showing as that was
not dead, not even sleeping, and
hoped that on tho 5th of June Oregon
would givo evidence of vitality in tho
Democratic rank.
On tho Chineso question 3Ir.
Strode gave utterancu io the opinion
that tho general attitude of the Re
publicans on that question was to bo
considered, and whilo conceding that
the Republicans of litis coast wero
unanimous against further immigra
tion, ho. claimed that as n national
organization tho Republican party was
not in lino with tho popular thought.
Ho proceeded to say some compli
mentary things in regard to our local
industries, our advantageous position,
etc., and aftor some personal rofer
onco to himself and tho position ho
occupied on tho ticket, ho bade the
audience good-night. His manner and
appearance on tho platform entitles
him to tho respectful consideration of
all. He was followod by 3Ir.
Cleveland, who used tho arguments
in favor of Democracy that are un
derlying the principles and theory of
the party, and wero consistent in their
enunciations of their political faith
At the close a round of cheers for tho
ticket was in order and tho audience
ose.
A Little "Singular."
ltaafctenks and roasts and such like
luxuries havo recently "riz" in price
here. The reason alleged is that the
eastern buyers have bought up such
enormous numbers of beef cattle and
driven them over the mountains that
tho supply can by no means equal 4ho
demand. This ia probably true, and
yet tho Cheney Sentinel is moved to
say: "This is an illustration of a
siugular condition of trade that scorns
at entiro variance witli every rnlo and
law of commerce. These beef cattle
are first driven ovor a weary and ex
pensive trail to tho Mississippi valley
or tho "plains of Kansas or Xebra3ka,
where they are butchered and retail
ed from 10 to 12i centfe a pound.
Thousands of them aro shipped by
rail to tho ports of tho Atlantic, and
from thcro to the continental countries.
A recent price current states that
American beef sells in tho London
market for 10 cents per pound; and it
will puzzle the profoimdest political
economist to logically account for tho
fact that high transportation can bo
paid "for n distance of 10,080 miles
and yet permit tho product to lie &old
at four cents a pound cheaper than it
brings in the very country whore it'is
produced.
