Sunday Morning.
But few comparatively are
"born to the purple." And it is a.
serious question whether those
who are thus, born, and are there
by relieved from a large measure
of the cares and anxieties common
to the world's toilers are any bet
ter off therefor. The faculties of
our natures that are not ..brought
into constant and active play be
come limp and ineffective frem dis
use. Thus the man born to an in
heritance of plenty misses all those
grand lessons of self denial and
necessity for patient and persistent
industry that can bo learned only
in the schools of adversity and
poverty. He misses the schooling
of those hard struggles with the
perplexing problems of existence,
so necessary to harden his muscles,
moral as well as physical, and
bring out the best that is in him.
It is natural -for the poor to envy
the lot of the rich especially of
those who live in luxurious ease,
and who, in the words of the Scrip
ture, "toil not, neither, do thoy
spin," the world's inutilities, the
pampered descendants of sires who
in all their busv lives knew no rest
nor peace of mind in the mad
acquisition of wealth, which did
them but little if any good, and
their descendants evil. If the poor
only knew it, they are better off as
they arc; not, of course, in a spirit
of abject acceptance of the pres
ent, but so long as they are
prompted to struggle for some
thing beyond their present lot and
are reasonably happy, even though
they fail to reach it:
"Hope springs eternal in the human
breast;
Man never is but alwajs to be blest,"
says Pope, and the world's ex
perience verifies the aphorism.
The struggle for it is the. main
thing needed. It keeps the mefal
bright and the faculties' in tuno.
No ono can afford to go through
lifo without experiencing .the ne
cessity for calling into constant
and vigorous -notion all his mental
powers. Whero the necessity is
wanting, the faculty will bo likely
to iie dormant.
Tho hardest-worked men in any
community are those who devote
their lives solely to tho acquisition
of wealth. By constant practice
and application they succeed in
developing the acquisitivo faculty
to an abnormal extent, at tho price
often. of all tho nobler attributes of
tho soul. This is true the world
over, from Athens to Astoria.
Such live? "are usually empty of
sunshine. They are beyond tho
pale vf human sympathy, are deso
late and unloved in the midst of
plenty. 'When thoy die, the south
wind .whose soft breath they un
heeded in lite will blow as sweet
ly; the violets tvhosp grateful
fragrance the' nuwr stopped to
inhale will -blossom as gloriously,
and the stars above, whoso twink
ling light they never saw, will shed
a grand luster above their grave
that no lamp above a king's tomb
can emulate. And we, ,4tho sur
vivors." Well, as we tead the
morning paper and sip our morn
ing coffee, some one on the other
side' of tho table
says:
'So old
'Aladdin is dead! and, by the way,
how mqob did be leave?" Ho left
everything, and that is his epitaph.
But probably the worst con
dition of blind in which a man can
find himself is that of being con
tented and satisfied with but.littlc
or nothing. This is the other ex
treme of lifo. It is tjhen a roan
is practically worthless to himself
and to the world. Only thoso suc
ceed in doing who try to do. To
float with the stream is the easiest
thing in the world; to stem lind
overcome it, and rise superior to
circumstance requires nerve and
manhood. , Right here is where
nature draws the line between the
good, and the good-for-nothing. .
We should aim to bo satisfied
only with what wo cannot help or
improve. And there is but very
little with, which we come in con-
tact, in our surroundings and
circumstances, that we cannot im
prove, if we have tho will to set
ourselves about it. If wo lack
tho will, the sooner we cease to
cumber tho earth, the better for
the earth. Contentment is only
annther name for indifference, and
though wo can all have what we
like simply by liking what wo
have, yet the natural impulse
should be for something better,
and thnt used as stepping stone
for something better still, must
put the soul in better shape for that
alleged hereafter that the great
and good of all ages have preached
and prophesied. In any events
'tis better so to act, that when all
of life fades away, a peace of
mind remains. "If there's another
world how great your bliss, and
if there's not, you've made the
most oj this."
