papers, relating to railroad matters
and eastern "Washington Territory.
He traveled and wrote almost con
stantly during the last few years of
his life, and nearly every paper in
Oregon and "Washington Territory
has been favored with some of his
communications, which usually re
lated to the resources of the North
west coast, of which he had a very
high opinion, and were always
wpllVritten and interesting. He
had a great fund, of information, a
large amount of common sense,
and a wonderful memory forji man
of his an-e. He was well informed
on all subjects, and has done more
by his writings to make known the
resources and advantages of Ore
gon and Washington Territory
than any other man. David New
some was a noble and true man
and a most excellent citizen. His
death is a public loss to Oregon
and Washington Territory. He
was a devoted Methodist and a, sin
cere advocate of temperance, and
freaucntlv delivered temperance
lectures. He leaves a lamny 01
children and grandchildren and a
wide circle of de oted friends to
cherish his memory."
Although it is more than prob
able that other names and obituary
notices should be entered upon
our record, yet your Correspond
ing Secretary has not received any
notice of such except through the
public papers, in which we find the
names of the Hon. Joseph Lane, an
honorary member of this society, of
Roseburg; General Joel Palmer,
of Yamhill; Hon. T. R. Coffin, of
Pertland: S. E. Barr, of Gray's
river, Pacific county, W. T.
Our estimates of deaths of the
pioneers of Oregon is 21 for the
years 1S81-2.
Twelve names were added to
our record by request and letter.
Our library has increased 110 vol
umes, not yet entered upon its
shelves for want of shelving and
proper care.

undertaken to procure the means
to erect a suitable monument to
the memory of the late Dr. Marcus
Whitman and his associate dead,
respectfully ask to present for
3'our consideration the accompany
ing facts:
1st. By reference lo the record,
the committee consisting of V. II
Gray, T. P. Powers, John Hobson,
W. 1). Hare and A Van Dusen,
were appointed February 2 1st,
1S74, eiht years ago February 2"),
18S?! .They were" instructed to
prepare an address to the people
and present it to the Mieicty on
the 8th of April, 187-1. Oii the
i-TJtii of March, the committee met
and discussed the subject of tiic
address and adjourned to the 8th
ot April, and after mature delib
eration agreed to repoit tho ad
dress and form of subscription and
recommend its adoption. On the
30th of Ms, a fourth meeting of
the commute ivas held and ar
rangements made for distributing
the circular letter and the sub
scription for funds directing that
thev should ba sent to the Grange
organizations and to postmasters,
and that the Ti easurcr should fur
nish copies of such address, circu
lars and blank envelope.
On the 29th of July, 1SH, the
first funds were received from
Hon. Phil. .Mctscham and W. D.
Rinehart $18. from the former
and $1-1. from the latter, making a
total of 632. from Grant county,
with a list cf donors' names.
At the same meeting, Hon. T.
P. Powers was unanimously ap
pointed to canvasi for funds, and
the Treasurer instructed to fur
nish blank receipts for funds, and
out) circular letters. 1 he corres
ponding secretary was instructed
to notify Hon. C. Moore, of Walla
alia, that the. committee had ap
pointed and requested him to act
as their agent'and procure funds
for the Whitman Monument. Mr.
Moore was duly notified but de
clined.
The subject of tho cost of the
monument came before this meet
ing, and it was resolved that the
amount should bo S10,000 for that
purpose or more if practicable.
On the 4th July, 187G, the
committee .met and requested and
appointed"Hon. W. D. Hare, he
having proposed a visit to Walla
Walla, to procure a deed to the)
Pioneer and Historical Societv of
Oregon for at least one aero of '
land in tho immediate vicinitv of.
the place where the bones of the
martyred Marcus Whitman and
his associates were originally de
posited, for the purpose of improv
ing and grading and erecting
thereon a suitable monument to
the memory ol the lamented
dead. Hon. Mr. Hare did not
mako the proposed trip.
A meeting of tho committee
was called on the 27th of Novem
ber, 1877, adjourned till 28th, met
and resolved that the correspond
secretary be and is hereby request-,
ed on behalf of the Pioneer und
Historical Societv of Oregon, to
write a letter to Mr. Moore of.
Walla Walla and ascertain fromi
him upon what terms this societv,
can procure about one acre of
ground, that the society may in
close the graves of Dr Whitman ,
and associates with the right of way!

and their successors, to be used i
