Death of Hobt Trencliard.
Tho many friends of Robt. M.

'You bet wo earn the little wo
make," said a fisherman to an Asio
eian reporter yesterday morning.
From where they Etd,the white sails
of the morning fleet were gleaming
brilliantly over tho flashing emerald
water as the littlo boats came bound
ing in from the bar after a night of
vigil. "Wc havo to take big chances
snd sometimes are lucky to get away
with life, let alone pulling and haul
ing at a heavy net all night for noth
ing."
It a hard work, and the little gleam
ogbl luck that sometimes occurs
when a good haul is made, hardly
makes up for tho hours and days of
patient work and watching without
any ronnrd. In this immediito vi
cinity the fishermen start down to the
bar in the afternoon and spie.id their
nets to float with tiio tido, the top
supported by cork, the bottom
weighted down with disks of leid.
When all goes well the net drifts
along slowly with tho tide, and the
moment the salmon gels his nose iti
sido and push e? ahead he h caught.
If lie is wary, and not in too big a
hurry ho feels the cord, and darts
back, often dropping under and evad
ing all the arts of the filter: butjren
crally the fish are eager by nature's
instinctive impulse to reach tho far off
waters where they can spawn, and
rush headlong to destruction. Tho
fishermen can tell by the corks where
tho captives are struggling, and ho
hauls in that part only. Occasionally,
a great school of freshly run salmou,
eagor to get up to the clear water and
pebbly bottom tf the upper stream,
ru-h madly against the-v-hule length
of the net, and then th- captain
and boat-puller aic in the saino fix
tli-it IVter and the Aposths en in,
on the Saa of Galilee, when they cill
ed to their comrades to help them or
their nets would break. Ju dull times,
when salmon aru scitc-, and sleep
lianas heavily on tho weiry watcher's
eyes, the fisherman has his patience
sorely trkd by the seals, who will
watch a net :.s carefully as does him
self, and rob it before his eyes. ' This
marine epicure ha3 an especial weak
ness for the jowl of tho salmon, and,
unless he be very hungry, he will only
take a bite of that portion. Having
taken one mouthful of it, ho tosses
it aside and seizes another, and in this
way will destroy twenty-five salmon
beforo tho fisherman can gut at him.
This wily jihuc.tcean is a foe to all the
finnv tribe: and countless fathoms
down he sinks to creep 'mid all tho
namoless shapes that haunt the deep,
but 11363 to niako a rush, more par
ticularly at the delicate salmon.
Sometimes retributive justice over
takes the robber, and the fisherman,
hauling in his snare, finds tho dark
coipse of his enemy rolled up in tho
net. The ponderous iud stupid stur
geon is another pest to the patient
fisherman. Nodding iu his boat, ho
sees the corks go whizzing under the
water, atd with great labor drags up
tho miles of twine and pounds of lead
only to find a worthless monster that
has to be cut loo3e.- In the salmon
season, sturgeon on the Columbia
aro not considered worth tho tnmhlo
of towing ahora.
Fdw lishermen aru making any
money this season, the light run so
far r.eriously interfering with their
calculations. Two years 'g- tho same
state of aff urs oxutcd, hut about tho
middle of duly the mIiiwu euae tu in
prodigious numbers. Oar. east uf a
not brought n;s 700 tish, ranging
from fifteen to sixty pound i and suf
ficient to load seven bo its to tho gun
wal". It was nothing unusual to
throw back great numbers of fish into
the stream and let them go on their
headlong way to the water courses
ab3vc. That year was als-i memorable
for tho great loss of life. During the
season of abundance few lives were
Io:t, as there was no necessity to tako
any risks. Fish could bo found in all
parts of tho stream. A few woska of
warm weather sent tho snows into the
upper Columbia and tho groit river
rushiid to the ocoan, swollen and tur
bulent. Great tracts wero inundated
and the tide affected. Tho latter dis
turbance of natura was fatal to many
a poor fellow. The fishermen watch
the tides caivfnlly, for at slack water
the fish are easiest caught. Leaving
their stations at the ebb tide they shoot
out their seines and drift down to float.
back on tho flood. Jt is an import
ant matter with them tf know exactly
when the tide shall turn. Tho best
Gshing ground is close to the bar, and
they want to venture no fntthvr. Iu
the season of '60, of which wo speak,
tho tido table was not to bo rnlied
upon. The great body : water
thrown by the Columbia into the ocean
delayi.d llu floods, so that the fisher
men were sometimes an hour ahead of
time. Believing that they wero on
tho last of the ebb they drifted down
and found themselves close to the bar
knot3 an hour. To pull a heavy
tweiity-fourfootboat against such a cur
rent was a feat few men were capable
of, and the only course left was to face
death with fortitude. Somo perished
through recklessness. Two, having a
heavy boat would venture out on
dangerous waters and come iu on the
flood of fortune with a great catch.
Next day, others who had been beat-
iugjibout for days, would follow their
example, and would be heard of no
more. Tako it altogether a fisher
men's life is not a happy one, and he
earns very cent lie makes during the
short and fatiguing season.

A Beautiful Sentiment.
Life bears us on like the current of
a mighty river. Our boat at first
glides down tho narrow channel
through tho playful murmuring of the
littlo brook and the winding of ita
grassy borders. The trees shed their
blossoms over our young heads; wc
aio happy in hope, and wo grasp
eagerly at tho beauty around us, but
the stream hurries on, and still our
hands are empty. Our course in
youth and manhood is along a wilder
and deeper flood, and objects mora
striking and magnificent. We are an
imated at tho moving pictures and en
joyments and industry around us;
wo aro excited at poiuo shoit lived
disappointment. The stieam bears
us on, and our ji-ys and griefs are
alike left behind us. Wo may ba
shipnrecked, but we ennnnt be de
layed; whether rough or smooth, the
river hastens to its home till tho roar
of the ocean is in our ears, and the
waves aro beneath our feet, and tho
land lu.-sens from our eyes, and the
floods are lifted up around us, and we
take our leave of earth and its inhabi

there is no witnoss, save the Infinito
