Salman Fishing.
Certain persons here, says the
San Fraaciseo Chronicle, claim to
t7 oaagte u&nwn for canning
parpe "4" ftfafgshg 'Golden
Gate) aadthat in tholjay ttiey aro
taken to omo extent by the fish
ennoa irho supply tbe Sacramento
river canneries. A fisherman, how
aver, -who has followed the busi
ness for a great many years, says
he is unaware of any salmon-being
caught so far out. Some tirao ago
he had boats and nets made ex
pressly for experimental fishing as
far out as the lighthouse, but he
found the work too dangerous, and
abandoned it-. Ou tho other hand,
a member of & canning company,
whose agency is located hero, as
serts that his establishment have
put up salmon caught noar the
Grolden Gate, and that they are
larger, fatter and redder than the
fish" caught elsewhere.
In tins connection, and by way
of explanation, it may be well to
state some of the habits of salmon.
Tho general belief scorns to be
that when theso fish attain the ago
of about one year they leave
thoir fresh water haunts and go
out to sea, returning in threo or
four years to the same placo, or
such as can get back to spawn.
This has been proven to bo the
case in several instances on tho
Columbia fiver, young fish having
been branded, and then recaught
at the same placo after three years.
Some of tho fishermen hold to
tho belief that tho salmon caught
here in salt water come trom the
great rivers of the North instead
of beiug propagated in the streams
of this state. Passing in from the
Grolden Gato', they come in schools
through" a narrow passage on .the
north side, and aro caught in large
numbers off Saucelito and over on
the Contra Costa side during high
water.
The canneries aro located at
tido water, and nono but tho salt
fish are-prcscrved, schooners com
ing down to the fishing grounds to
load'from the boats of the fisher-
men.
It is considered probable that
Jus. Russell Lowell will bo re
called from England, and deprived
of his position of United States
Minister. Ha is a. well educated,
well meaning man, but grossly
out of pl.ice. In his last asser
tion ho violated o:io of our na
tional precepts. Being called
upon to make some btir because
English authorities arrested some
Irish-Americans in Dublin, he
answered, "It is manifestly en
tirely futile to claim that natural
ized cittzons should bo exempted
from tho operation o f tho coercion
"law." Minister Lowell has, no
doubt, learned by this time that
American law recognizes no differ
?enco between .a, native and a nat
uralized citizen .
RcCEKT'exploratipns show that
tho e,astern shoro of'tho gulf of
Obi, in Northern Stboria, is four
teen miles':west of the placo as
signed to it on existing maps.
The stagnation in ocean freights
on the Atlantio side is reportod as
being unparalleled. Oil cake is
txkon from New York to Liver
pool for 62 cents per ten: forty
cents "a ton is all wheat commands.
It has boon taken in Baltimore
far-the cost of loading and dis
charging Eastehk reports are to tho
tenor that there is a perceptible
Blackening in the demand lor rail
road materials. Tho steel rail
mills have plenty of orders; tho
locomotive works have begun dis
charging men; and locomotives,
which a year ago could bo bought
for 115,000 aro now procurablo
for IfS.OOO
Hever ro shopping without con
milting the advertislns;,columns of The
Abtoriax. They will tell you where
the best bargain's are to be had, and just
wilt mtriftJUrts arc alive and doing
EtrnorEAN- steamer agonts re-
port a rush both ways this season.
Wealthy Americans aro still im
bued with tho idea that it is the
"correct thing to do Yurrup," so
thdy rush across tho water by tb e
thousand every summer. Immi
grants aro coming over by tho ten
thousand; tho difference being
that those eastern bound go in tho
cabin while the western passen
gers are mostly in tho steerage.
After they ."aro horo a few years,
they, too, can revisit their native
land and travel on a first-class
ticket.
