Described by Professor Ward of Rochester. Of course I did not- leave the King's palace without going to s"ee bis famous white elephants, of which he now possesses five. They are in a long block of buildings at the rear of the arsenal. Hero each elephant has entire, distinct stables appointed to its use, with tho sleep ing appartments of its .score of grooms and feeders in one end. Tho stable is a large, high hall, with plain floor and walls, and at one end a small seated Buddha im age with littlo lamps burning in front. The great beast stands on its handsomely-built pedestal, raised about a foot from the floor, with its top just largo enough to hold him. On one sido of this, near tho front and the rear, are two high, stout posts, gilded and otherwise gaudily ornate. To these the royal captive is chained with velvet-covered ropes by one t foro and ono hind leg. He stands proudly yet restlessly ou bis con tracted throne, and lashes his trunk, and sways his heavy head and tusks around in an imperious, lordly manner, trumpeting now and then until the whole hall trem bles with deafening reverberation. His keepers arc very attentive, and constantly deal out to him dainty mouthfuls of bananas, pine apples, short sticks, of sugarcane, and litt'.o bundles of fresh, sweet grass from a large pile of these which is heaped near by. Every one of his wants is assiduously at tended to; when he is seeu to itch in any part of his body his royal hide is promptly scratched with a small iron rako-liko instrument with a long handle; his eyes arc reverently wiped, and ho has a cool sponge bath every hour or two in the day and night during the hot season. Over tho door of each stablo is a large, richly orna mentecLsign of gold letters, giving tho inmates, full.rogular name and title. This th guide reads to you in reverently hushed breath; in deed, theso names, like that of tho king, it is not proper for an' of tho Siamese to speak aloud. Nothing can equal tho venera tion of this people for tho white elephant. Tho King must havo at least one as a palladium for his own life and prosperity of his em pire. The real cause lor this rev erence for the great albino pachy derm is that he is supposed to bo tho incarnation of some past or of some future Buddah, and will, thorefore, bring blessings on tho country which possesses and cher ishes so great a treasure. Time -was when theso beasts were wor shiped by King and people. Their stables wero palaces; they were fed from golden dishes, and wore heavy gold rings upon their tusks, and wero fettered with golden chains. Evon now tho populace fall with thoir heads to tho ground as they are load out richly capari soned on state occasions; whilo tho royal officers, and evon tho King himself, alwas mako them obeisanco in passing. The finder of a white elephapt is loaded- with honors and emoluments, taking his place at one stop among the nobles of the kingdom. Thoy come from tho Laos territory, far to tho north, and are brought down tho river on rafts magnificently decked out, and accompanied by guards of honor and bands of music: At Aguthia, sixty miles up tho river, they are met by the King with his entire royal retinue, who, in the grandly adorned state bargos, fol low tha noble beast to its future home with great parade and re joicing. Tt is a late moment for mo to iUt& that these "white" elephants have not all the fulh.css or depth j of that color which we usually un derstand, or which the adjective demands. Over most of their body they havo the dull, muddy lead color common to this beast. Only in spots upon their legs and in patches on shoulders, neck, side of head and inside of ears, the skin is of a dii ty cream color, not quite pleasant to look at, besides being abundantly splashed with coarse freckles. No one would think of calling them white. One only of their number, the fifth and last one obtained, is of a faint, brick red over his entire body, which gives him an odd and not altogether un pleasant appearance, ne is, moreover, young, lively and good natured, and salaams by raising his trunk straight and high above his head to all well-dressed visit ors in a way that quite scanda Iizesjiis keepers, who have taught all the others to reserve that s;i- lute solely for tho King. Wore , ho not himself too royai to be j .vliipped, I dare say that this merry naohvderm miirht soon he taught to recognize the honor reserved to loyalist". White animals of ail kinds albino accidents seom to bo rather frequent in Siam, and the people of all grades have a sort of religious feeling of respect towards them. White monkeys and white magpies are kept by the nobles in rich, costly cages The bonzes or priests salute :t white cock which they mav meet! in tiieir walks, when they would i not salute a Princo on like oeca-j sion. j Useful as Well as Ornamental. Miss Brewster, in accord ance with lier father's wishes, caught the ''rooster," nnd-binding him firmly, &o as to prevent him from struggling, decorated him with admirable taste. Her first operation was to paint him a rich dark blue as a background. Upon this she spread designs in white or o-old such us golden head-, of pearance of that fowl when com-' ! pk-ted would have drawn tears of admiration from the most hard- oned naturalist, ne was simply magnificent, and when he survey ed himself it) a mirror thoughtfully provided for the purpose, he ex pressed his own appreciation of Miss Brewster's work by a tiium- phanl crow.
