DrlTing Seals to Market.
Accoodiko to a recent consus
bureau publication, it is the prac
tice in Alaska to drive seals to
market in about JtKe same.fasbion
as one wqtilff driTefsheep or hogs.
The seals we not found on the
coast of the mainland, but they
frequent the Prybiloo islands in
tha Behring Sea. The seals caught
there are not like those of Labra
dor, which are taken more for
their oil than for their skins, but
are the genuine fur seal, whoso
toft warm coats eventually enfold
the forms of society belles. The
islands are bleak, cold, desolate
places, bare of timber, and in the
summer time almost always over
hung with thick fogs or clouds,
shutting out the warm rays of the
sun; but thoy aro pleasant to the
seals who like a cool temperature.
The seals begin to oppoar at the
islands in May, the first comers
being invariably bulls. Thoy se
lect for themselves plots of ground
on tho beach, and as later arrivals
attempt to dispossess them, des
perate combats take place. They
fight entirely with their mouths,
and while their fat bodies writ ho
with exertion and i age, their heads
dart out and.back with surprising
swiftness. Their teeth teir out
deep gutters in one another's hides
tho blood streams down, and a fu
rious roaring, mixed with shrill
whistling sounds never ceases
whilo the battle lasts. These
fights are always between males,
and end as soon as one gives up
the coveted position to tho other.
Last May, one old bull fought be
tween forty and fifty battles, and
when tho fighting season was over
he lorded it proudly over his fam
ily of fifteen or twenty females, al
though one of his eyes had been
gouged out, and his front was cov
ered with gashes. When tho
males take up their positions, thoy
must remain on guard day and
night, so that they have no oppor
tunity to go after food until tho
end. of tho season, in tho early
part of August. Hence they fast
for three months or more. When
they come up from the sea thoy
are so fat that the blubber is
packed about their shoulders in
unsightly masses. At the end of
tho season they are lean, limp, ab
ject and spiritless, hardly able to
crawl back icto tho Fea.
The cow or frmale seals gener
ally inako their nppearanco about
tho middle of June. Tho bulls
then have their last desperate
fights and thoso who remain, in
possession of eligible portions of
the boach monopolize thn society
of tho females. As a. result of
this arrangement about two-thirds
of the young seals are cut ofr from
female companionship. These
seals aro known as tho bachelors,
and herd together by thousands
away from tha breeding grounds,
sometimes miles distant. These
soals aro tho ones captured for
their fur3, and thoy are driven
along over tho ground to tho
slaughter fields. Tho Aleuts em
ployed by tho company which has
a lease of tho seal fisheries slip in
betweon the dozing seals and tho
water. The first impulso of the
seals when startled is to mako for
tho water, but when they see men
in the way they turn and scramble
up tho land. Tho Abuts follow
after, keeping the seals together
and driving them ahad as if it
was a herd of twinn thoy weic di
recting. Singular as it may scorn
in viow of tho un wield inosa of a
seal when on land, it is asserted
"that when hard pressed a seal can
lope along as fast as a man can
run, but it is soon exhausted and
falls helpless. Ordinarily a droro
of seals travel at tho rate of half a
jnile an hour. Three or four men
can manage as many thousand
ppals. There aro frequent halts to
allow tho seals to rest The pant
ing' animals fan themselves with
their hind flippers, and when they
avc gotten their wind ajraio a
rioutand clatter" of bones from
tho Aleuts starts the herd n itslLIBERT Y HALL.

only tho bachelor seals are hunted J
and the breeding places are not
disturbed, the seal islands of Al
aska will remain a regular source j
of supply to the fur trade. Rut if
the breeding grounds are hunted,
the seals aro exterminated or driven
away. Many years ago the shores
of Patagonia and tho Antarctic
islands swarmed with millions '-f
fur seals, and now thoy have
come rare animals where nnvo
they abounded. "
