Forest Fires.
Ik speaking of our American
forests, Consul Denny, writing
from Shanghai, says:
Some idea of the damage done
bv fire to the Oregon forests may
be had byobservingfromtho deck
as the vessel proceeds along the
coast towards San Francisco for
two or three hundred miles of the
distance, the half-consumed,
broken, and decayed trees, once
as fine as any that ever adorned a
forest. Neither are these waste
districts confined alone to the
Coast Range, for they are found
far too often among the forests
throughout Oregon and Washing
ton Territory. In this destruction
"the uoblo red man" has played
an important part. During the
summer months, when everything
is as dry as tinder almost, it is his
custom to go into tho forest with
squaw and papoose to gather
berries, and when the pick is over
the torch is applied to create now
fields to take the place of the old
ones, which arc continually being
choked out by the heavy under
growth, taking no noto of the con
sequences, thinking only of the
prolific crop of blackberries and
raspberries the fresh vines which
spring up will yield him when ho
comes again.
Then, too, fires often occur
through tho gross carelessness of
hunters and campers. Frequently
the camp fire is left so that it com
municates with tho surrounding
dry leaves, then the work of de
struction begins; or it is built at
the roots of a standing dead tree,
and, running to the top, is carried
off by tho wind with the same re
sult. Then, again, there is a want
of caution in many cases in firing
the grubs and dead- timber in the
clearings, and great damage to
propertv and forests frequently
results. In'fact, once these fires
are fairly started upon their ruin
ous journev who can estimate tho
loss or its character: Everything
liofore them is consumed except
earth arid water, -anil in their
cagernesb for destruction small
lakes and rivert nro leaped as
though they did not rrois tlio fiery
track. This condition of things
lasts as long :e thero i fuel to
feed tho. flames, or until they arc
quenched by tho heavy rains. The
recent terrible fires in tho State of
Michigan will long bo felt by that
commonwealth, ami while the
proporty consumed was very
great, and loss of life appalling,
yet the destruction of timber was
no greater than that wasted in
this way annually in cither Ore
gon or Washington Territory. Of
course, the. mere destruction of
timber, great ab it was, sinks en
tirely out of sight when one thinks
of the harrowing details of that
great calamity. - Three whole
counties it is said wore swept by
the flames, consuming towns, vil
lages, farm-houses, barns, out
houses, and grain fields, and leav
ing many thousands of people
homeless sufferers. But that
which gives to it a melancholy
and ghastly reality, is tho fact
that the blackened and charred
remains of several hundred hu
man beings, embracing in some
instances whole families, were
gathered from tho ruins. What
punishment could bo inflicted that
would meet the case if it should
appear that all this suffering and
death was tho result of criminal
or even gross carelessness? The
first important step towards tim-ber-culturo
in the United States
will have boon taken when more
stringent measures are adopted
looking to the preservation of her
forests from tho annual fires which
now sweep through them with
juch fatal results.
