A I'opular Error Corrected.
It is a common "belief that most
of tho imoiigrants-to" the United
States "go West.". It appears
that this is a jfopular error. Some
of our exchanges have been gath
ering statistics on this point. A
tabular Bureau Statement of tho
destination of 385,057 persons who
had arrived at our seaports up to
June 30, 1871, shows destinations
as follews:

Pennsylvania 30.475
Ohio. 19,107
Massachusetts 11,097
Illinois 43,449

Wisconsin and Iowa 2346
Total to nine states 310,101
This leaves but 7-1.05G for all
other states and territories. The
great state of Texas, which is
larger than New England, New
York and Pennsylvania combined,
got but 1,201 of these immigrants,
California only 3,007,- Kansas,
3,881, Colorado, 1,210, Oregon,
161. Those locating in the terri
tories were apportioned as follows.:
Dakota, 1,828, Utah, 1,951, Mon
tana, 122, Wyoming, 80, Arizona,
79, Washington territory, 71, New
Mexico, 23. The. following is the
destination in the southern states,:

It is further stated that tho
crowded New England states re
ceived to within 4,000 as many
immigrants as tho entire south.
The states that received over four
fifths df these 385,017 immigrants
are those which .contaitijgreattcit-
it, anu ii is mereiore prcsumca
thoy have in a great measure lo
cated in the cities.
As the states and territories con
tinuo to grow in population some
of them quite rapully it is patent
that the accession of population
is from tho older communities. In
other words the new foreign ele
ment drops into the older states .of
the north, and the natives seek a
now field. Hence wherever c go
throughout the great west, we find
the ubiquitous "Yankee."
SilTer Accessary.
Tiik Constitution of the United
States makes gold and silver coin
only a lawful legal tender for the
payment of all debts. It may bo
asked, what makes the value of a
gold dollar of 25 8-10 grains, and
also what makes the value of a sil
ver dollar 412i grains? It is sim
ply law. It is not the intrinsic
value of either, but simply a legal
onactment.
The people of this country
seem to be wedded to a paper
currency. Thero aro three kinds,
viz.: Greenbacks, National bank
notes and silver certificates. The
two former are founded on credit,
and have no intrinsic value behind
"them, excepting faith. The latter,
silver certificates, arc representa
tive, and have dollar for dollar in
silver as a basis of value. This
renders them tho soundest paper
currency of our country.
The catch-word which is trum
peted throughout the country and
used to prejudice silver dollars, is
unworthy of men having even the
first rudiments of financial knowl knewl
edge: "Givo us a silver dollar
worth a gold dollar."
Whan silver was receivable and
coined, as gold now is, at the va
rious points of the world, it was
at a premium. From 1835 to 1875,
tho premium was from about one
to five poncent above gold. "Why
did not these astute financiers cry
out, "give us a gold dollar worth
a silver dollar?"' Both gold and
silver were equally treated by the
mints of the world excepting the
English, and the difficulty was to
obtain sufficient silvor for coinage.
Restore this same equality at the
same mints, and silver would, as
before, be at a premium abov
gold. "Why? Because silver is a
necessity, while scold is onlv a con
venience. Silver is the money for
the masses; gold is a currency for
bankers.
Stop one hundred men as they
pass by your door, and ask them
to show their pockets, and .silver
in a greater or less quantity would
be found in all, while it is doubt
ful whether one would have gold.
Silver coin is used in every coun
try of the world and by all classes
whether rich or poor. The coun
tries using gold comprises only
about one-third of the world's in
habitantspand in tho richest coun
tries, say England and France,
probably silver performs larger
functions in buying and selling
than all their gold and bank notes
combined. To subtradt the s i!
sidiary coin from England would
produce a greater personal incon
venience th.in'the loss of its gold.
This world could do "without gold,
but silver is indispensable.
At a recent meeting of Demo
crtic chiefs in Chicago, it was
thought that the national debt was
boing paid off too fast; that it
should be paid till the country
Owed a thousand million dollar-,
an even thousand and then the
debt should be funded and made
perpetual. If, as alleged, the
Democratic leaders arc in search
of a new issue, one that hasn't
been beaten and buried out of
sight a generation ago, they have
it hero; hut in a modified fonu.
Whether they can get the people
of tho United States to endoiae it
or not is quite another matter. It
is a sort of a paraphrase on the ex
ploded doctrine of ancient politi
cal economists that "a national
debt is a national blcssinsr." The
flavor of age K however, always
an attraction to those who walk
with backward glance.
The seemingly incredible state-ment-that
the cost 'of fences in
tho United States amounts lo
considerably more than the nation
al debt, i- given color by the
Bureau of Statistics of Indiana,
which says that tho fences of that
state.if extended in a single line,
would go around the world n'arly
fourteen times! Their aggregate
length is put down at over o 14,
000 miles and their total cost not
less than 200,000,000.
