It cosis about $800 simply to
transfer tho freight from tho wharf at
San Francisco into tho hold of tho
State of California, which carries
1.000 tons. This, of course, i3 more
per'ton than if there were not such a
varictv of elasses of merchandise, the
proper storage of which takes time
and experienced "labor. It costs less
to unload ship as thcro is no stow
age, tho freight being dumped moro
or less promiscuously on the wharves.

At Salem one is apt to hear of poli
tics somewhat. It is the state capital,
and honce natural enough- There is
the railroad and anti-railioad crowd
in both parlies; the railroad people
are talking of Moody, Republican, fur
Governor; Mitchell and Dolph for
Senators. There is also Dave Thomp
son for Governor, and M. C. George
I for representative, both on the Repub
lican side. The Democrats arc talk
ing of Judge Honliam and .Tudgc
Shaw for Governor, and- Judge Mc-
! Arthur for Representative. Judging
from tho general feeling over tho
country, I believe it would be well for
tlioae- who hold railway passes to keep
out of the field this election. The
pooplc who should b allowed to ride
on free passes are those that pay.
And again, nearly all those that now
travel with passes: are able to pay

Portland proposes to improve 'the
river at her own expense. Thia no
ble example the people f Astoria
should follow by raising a small tax to
drag on the bar below Astoria. This
i3, provided nu appropriation is not
made this session. Portland and As
toria will probably work together line
after m the matter of bar improve
ment. Tho Dalles is improving. The peo
ple hero complain of the high rates of
freight to Portland. They are cer
tainly exorbitant, but if the mer
chants of The Dalles had a small part
of the pluck and independence of the
Astorians, freight rote would not be
half so high.
Astoria has no prospects of any rtil
road that I know of, but railroads are
being built everywhere, and to places
in Oregon that cannot piomise one
tenth tho business that Astoria docs.
Astoria i3 the only place note,
either in Oregon, California or Wash
ington Territory, without a railroad.
Altogether conflicting inrtrvsi.i have
brought about a ileteiniined opposition
to a railroad to Astoria by the Villard
management. A few years of such
prosperity as Astoria is now having
cannot fail to bring a road from an

Cigarette-Consumed 7011U1.
Like a midnight apparition th.it can
not be shaken off, the cigarette-consumed
young man haunts one daily
in the streets and nightly in tho thea
ters and saloons. His sallow cotinle
nance,betokening tho signs of approach
ing dissolution, appears ever an J anon
between tho masas of death-laditt
smoke which arise and are ivafted into
the faces of healthy pcdestmni, caus
ing sensations of a sickly naturo. The
smile with which h' greats you U only
an alleged smile, itad thc.hoSlow voice
which utters his equally hullov.' uords,
grates on the car and imkts one think
of how a skull might talk if skulls
were gifted with speech. His walk is
a totter, his breath savors of the cliar-nol-housc
and his eyes wear a pitiful,
pcinful, idiotic look. The rising gen
eraton promises to be largely compos
ed of the cigarette-consumed young
men unless stringent measures are
taken to counteract existing tenden
cies. It were better that Mother
Shipton had been right,or that the
sun hurry up and. 1 each the earth,
than that such a result transpire. It
would bo vastly belter for tho young
man to bo sun-consnmed than cigarette-consumed.
Tiio cigarette-con
sumed young man is a bore, and the
world is tired of seeing him around.
