FOR
THE END.
"I have been a resident of "Wash
ington for thirty-two years," said
Bob Strong. "I was on the police
force at the Capitol for six or
seven years under French. My
brother was the contractor for the
building of both wings of the Capi
tol. Of late years I have been
employed at the jail for the past
twelve or thirteen years six years
at the new jail. For the past ten
or twelve years I have been the
person to adjust the knot and fix
the rope at executions. I did it
at the hanging of Bedford and
Stone and put the rope over Bed
ford's head. The physician al
ways suggests as to the arranging
of the knot about the neck so that
it will not go to far back of the
ear. I always remain on the scaf
fold until the body is lowered into
coffin. I was considerably shocked
at the Stone exhibition, when the
culprit's head was cut off as clean
as if done bv a saber. The reason
for his head being jerked ofF was
not the length of the fall, but
Stonc had gained flesh, and at the ,
same the muscles of the neck h.id
withered away turned to a kind
of froth. He weighed 20G pounds
at the time he was hanged. The
rope Guiteau will be hanged by is
three-quarters of an inch in di-
ameter and of manila. The pris-1
oner stands on tne trap, ana alter
tho drop the head is supposed to
be on a level, or to go just below
the floor of-the platform. I always
test the ropes with a 200-pound
sand bag at a drop of seven feet.
I talk tovGuiteau every dav. I
never ha'vep"oken to him directly
of his coming ieath, but he makes
fun of it whenv-tajked to on the
subject. His brother paid him a
visit to-day, and he told him how
to dispose of his hat and his
clothes. Some of those I have
seen executed exhibited great
courage before death. Wood and
Wright weakened, Wood more
than others. Some ef them had
beenjgiven coffee and brandy, and
had to be supported by the priests.
From what I have seen, I think
that Guiteau, when he feels that
the thing is settled, and he knows
that there is no more hope of get
ting away, will not go upon the
scaffold game. I think he will die
like a cur. The scaffold is now
ready and the rope prepared.
When I prepare the rope the first
work is to get it limber and the
notches out of it. Then I rub it
with tallow where it goes round the
neck. I saw nine men hung at
one time in Australia, when I was
a sailor on a whaler in 183S. I will
not use any of the ropes that have
been donated in hanging Guiteau.
I will use one of my own, the one
used when Bedford was hanged,
as no better one could be got in
America. I am not afraid of any
mistake being made. None as
yet. I am fifty-eight years of age
the 9th of March." Washington

A Georgia Fish. Pond.
Sam Subers, says the Macon,
Ga., Telegraph, has fully demon
strated the fact that n small- fish
pond dug in the middle of a garden
is a source of much genuine satis
faction and profit. Of late years
Southern people have directed
much attention lo this branch of
industry, if it may be so called,
and all over Georgia can bo found
these miniature ponds of water, in
which are raised myriads of fish at
a cost next to'nothing.
Four years ago Mr. Subers had
his little pond dug in his garden
at about the expense of digging
an ordinary well. He obtained a
few fish from Mr. Singleton, a few
from Mr. Wippler, and gave a
GITITEATJ - PREPARING
colored man two doll.trs to bring
him a black bream from'the swamp.
Then he shut his eyes for a year
end a half, and waited for the fish
to grow. And they grewgrow
in quantity and' size. The jr.ble
was supplied twice a week, and he
has kept up the programme at a
trifling cost.
When the fish commissioners
came along with their canisters of
German carp, and the papers were
full of their excellent eating quali
ties, he procured a few to stock
his pond. They dived into the
rnud, and his liithei to clean pond
began to assume the appearance
of a mud puddle. The carp did
not prove so valuable an eating
fish as the bream, having much the
flator of catfifch. But the bream,
of which the pond has millions, is
acceptable to ail palate.
The expense of feeding these
fish is really lets than feeding half
a do7en chickens, to say nothing
of having the chickens stolen.
Mr. Subers gave about twenty-five
cents for a box of old worm-eaten
crackers, and they furnish excel-
lent feeding. A few mulberries,
with an occasional treat in the way
of corn bread crumbs, is all that is
necessary, and the fish go on
growing and multiplying world
without end.
The fish pond is an institution
to be encouraged. Every ma:
in
who owns a garden can easily dig j
one, and as it keeps the surround-
ing ground always moist, it will
be found a most valuable means
of making garden-truck grow.
Think of "brown-fried bream
cverv morning for breakfast at a ;
t
cost of only the salt that seasons ,
them. Really, it is something '
worth speakiiig about.

The practice is common among
the engravers and watchmakers of
German- gf hardening their tools
in sealing wax. The tool is heated
to whiteness and pluriged into the
wax, withdrawn after an instant,
and plunged again, the process be
ing repeated until the steel is too
cold to enter tho wax. The ad
vantages claimed for this method
are that the steel becomes almost
us hard as a diamond, and -when
touched with a little oil or turpen
tine, the toohs arc superior for en
graving, and also for piercing the
hardest of metals.
Southern Oregon Mineral
We have a mineral belt one
hundred miles long by forty miles
wide. It is quartz and placer.
The placer mines have been worked
for the last sixteen years, and last
year yielded $1,250,000 in gold
dust. We have in Baker county
some heavy and extensive gravel
mines, in an old river bed channel
that runs through this mineral belt,
twenty-five miles west of Baker
City. It has been traced and pros
pected for twenty miles. We are
waiting for ditches to develop the
mines. The deposit runs from
twenty to sixty and seventy-five
feet deep, and runs gold from
grass roots to bed rock. It will
take a canal eighty miles long to
cover this dead river channel,
which I am now organizing a com
pany to build. There are large
placer camps on the shallow gravel,
but there has been little of the
heavy gravel worked yet. Quartz
mines have not been developed of
course. Six or seven mincstare
running, one 01 two being staitcd
in the past year. The Virtue
Gold Mining company, which has
been running for more than ten
years, has taken out over $1,500,-
000. It is located eight milqs
from Baker City, and has a twenty
stamp mill and hoisting works,
and is developing to the depth of
fifty feet, showing a true fissure
vein and free milling gold, and
average fortv dollars per ton.. The
copper mines are located twenU
miles east of Baker City, where
three large mines have been opened
and developed, and at one of these
mines a smelter was erected sev-
eral years ago. The ore runs as
high as sixty percent. Cor. Oma-
