A California paper says that a
squirrel, which was killed the other
day while carrying away wheat from a
warehouse on the San Joaquin river,
"was found to have 1,803 grains' of
wheat stowed away in its mouth."
That squirrel had a well doveloped
cheek. So did tho paper that told the
story.
For the past year or two the English
papers have had accounts of a disease
among salmon. It manifests itsolf in
the form of a fungoid growth which
resembles that often seen upon a fish
which has been injured by nets or by
handling. This fungus is evidently
the effect and not tho cause of the
disease. Wo now read in Scotch
papers that "a mystorious disease pre
vails among tho salmon of tho Tweed
which is decreasing their number to
an alarming oxtent. It is estimated
that fifty per cent, of the fish are
affected. The epidemic i attributed

How Does He Do It?
Any one who is conversant with the
facts of anatomical science, or has at
all reflected upon the remark of the
Psalmist that he is fearfully and won
derfully made, cannot fail to look upon
boys sliding down hill with mingled
wonder and apprehension. As is well
known, the common practice of tho
youth of this city is to perform the
operation of coasting in a position
which is called, with more of force
than elegance, "boily-bump,"of which
it is sufficient to say that the ntme
itself is more eloquent than volumes
of commentary. The boy picks up his
sled by the two ends thereof, runs
violently for a couple of rods, and
then, projecting himself and hi3 sled
horizontally into spice, conies down
with a thump (and in some inscrutable
way right sido up), which makes tho
spectator instinctively look to see his
breast-bone stick out between his
shoulder blades and his ribs appear
on all sides of his body like tho quills
on that fretful purcupine. And yet
nobody ever svw A boy who had been
injured by this operation. On the
contrary, it only seems to stimulate
his gastric secretimis, and to send him
homo to atipper with'nn appetite liko
the locusts of Egypt.

Many people have asked, what
does "Court in Banc" moinj "Banc,"
brought into legal language from the
French, means "bench," and conies
to us from English law. "B.inc
Renis" was tho title of the King's
Bench, which was above all other
Courta, and appeal to which is final.
The "Court in Banc," therefore,
means tho Supremo Court of tho Dis
trict in full bunch.
Simmon3, the Portland constable,
now in San Francisco, has obtained
tho necessary warrants from Gov.
Perkins, of California, and left yestor
day on tho steamship State of Califor
nia with Carrio Bradley, Sullivan and
Mahoneyin charge. P.issengers by
tho Oregon say that it 13 rumored
in San Francisco that Hamilton is
concealed in that city, which is very
improbable, but should it provo Mruo,
his capturo will not long bo delayed.
Tho Standard is movod to say
that tho loss of the Corsica "is prob
ably due entirely to tho management
of thoso in charge." Our Portland
contemporary is usually so fair in its
statements that we ctn not think it

So ran tho couplet in a well-thumbed
almanac read no matter how many
years ago, for when tho summit is
passed and tho shadows begin to
lengthen on the downward elopo you
care less and less to number them in
their flight, and was recalled by tho
pure whito niautlo that this morning
covered eiery object; tho "rain" and
tho '-hail" and the "sleet" have al
ready done their part, Skating has
been one days amusement, and the
sound of sleigh bells has been abroad
upon the streets, but the tinkle could
not bo called a "icerry" one, as tho
sleighing was too heavy fur pleasure
either for man or beast; tho leaden
fog and mist of to-day was a reminder
of Astoria, and in consequence of the
Daily Astobian, the ever welcome
visitor that norer fails to reach the
fireside, but comes "in spite of wind
and weather," filled with the choicest
of selections and sprightly locals the
latter read with particular interest
owing to remerabranco of many pleas
ant acquaintances formed in summer
day3 agouo the former conned be-H
cause of tho good taste shown in their
selection. Please do not even men
tally ejaculato "flattery," for bo as
sured your correspondent never flat
ters or pays unmeaning compliments.
A good understanding can be arrived
at only by adopting this declaration
as a platform.
Tho meeting of the State Temper
ance Alliance filled tho city with
tpostles of the cause, much enthusi
asm prevailed and many resolutions
adopted in its furtherance, but sinco
then the normal quiet has resumed its
sway; you know Salem, as behooves
tho capital of so important a state as
ours is always on its dignity; it never
gushes or is carried away by any en
thusiasm beyond a point consistent
with its position, (excepting bi-annu-ally
in legislative times.)
Noting the fact that Upper Astoria
has been visitod with that dreaded
scourge -small pox is a reminder
that Sulemites have had a limited ex
perience in a if possible worse mala
dy, diphtheria, leaving tho vacant
chair in soveral mourning households.
In this connection it may not be out
of place to. mention a circumstance as
illustrating the contagions nature of
the diseaso and the extromo caution
which should bo observed to prevent
its spread.
Not long since a family camo up
from California awLstopped with rela
tives a short distance from the city;
the host hid fivo daughters, one of
whom was takon with diptheria, when
tho visitors acknowledged to having
had a case of it not a fatal one in
tho family previous to thoir arrival.
Tho child diod, then second, and n
third, in less than a month; but tho
end was not yet; tho newcomers went
to visit another family of relatives,
consisting of fathor, mother and two
children; in a short time the mother
and ono child wore victims to the
scourge, leaving a desolatu father with
tho care of a child. The circumstances
as told wero very Bad and touching;
a little home had been redeemed from
tho wilderness, and by yoars of labor
had just been freed from debt, only
to be robbed of two of its priceless,
mouthers.
ARTISTIC.
Miss Mary Bridges, a young lady
for many yeara a resident of Salem,
has just returned from San Francisco,
whero she was a pupil in tho Academy
of Design, bringing with her tho most
artistic work in crayons, and decora
tions on tiles and China ever before
brought to the city. Her work is a
surpriso to our citizens, who were not
awaro of her artistic abilities.

its name implios, a chatty organ for
tho current tonics of tho day.
BELI0I0U3.
In tho way of entertainments for
denominational benefit, tho churches
havo not "taken tho town" as much
as the members havo boon accused of
heretofore, yet sociables havo not en
tirely lost their popularity. The Con
gregationaluts , aro rehearsing "Es
meralda" (published in Century Maga

ing of amateurs from loading society
circles; tho drama will be produced

time the pomps and vanities of the
