" Following is a list of the wrecks
and losses on Columbia river bar
during four years ending Dec. 31,
1881, caused by reason of the
depth of the channels being too
little:
1878.
About Jan. 1st, three vessels
struck on the bar going out south
channel in tow of tugs. The
Aberstwythe Castle was able to
continue her voyage and the Pil
grim was obliged to put into San
Francisco for repairs. Cost of re
pairs, delay, etc., not known hero.
The third ship, Nimbus, sunk in
tho ocean a few miles off fJiore;
total loss of vessel and cargo.
Value of vessel (estimated) S 40,000
cargo 92,490
5132,490
1879.
About June, steamer Great Re
public, owing to crooks of channel,
drifted on the sands; total loss of
vessel, nearly so of cargo, and ten
lives lost.
Value of vessel (estimated) $i.".o,000
" cargo 30,()00
S180.000
1880.
Early in the year the steamer
California, now Eureka, knocked
off her rudder post in crossing out
and went into dry dofik for repairs.
Cost unknown here. March 10th,
the ship Dilharre in tow of two
tugs was unable to turn in the
elbow of the north channel, struck
on the sands and became a total
loss.
Value of vessel (estimated) S 45.000
" cargo 7T,22S
S12J.2JS
1881.
About November, the ship Edith
Lome, sailing out, fctuck fast and
became a total loss.
Value of vessel (estimated).
u cargo .".
..30,000
.. 44,000
S 74,000
Total in four jears $508,724
This does not include vessels
wrecked out of the channels about
tho mouth of the river. And now
must be chronicled the latest dis
aster, the loss of tho Corsica.
Bosh.
The following is an example of
the silliness and attempted injus
tice that tho editor of tho Polaris
perpetrates upon an intelligent
circle of 'mistaken patrens: "Do
not the American people gener
ally understand that Roman Cath
olic military companies are al
ready organized all over tho laud?
Is it not a fact that such an organ
ization is now drilling in this city?
Think of a Methodist, or Presby
terian, or Baptist military organ
ization in every city in America!
Is it not true that new secret or
ganizations are forming within the
papal church? Do Our citizens
not know that every great city in
America is literally honey-combed
with secret vaults, passage-ways,
and chambers often extending under-ground
from one street to an
other, within which no heretic can
ever enter? If Americans do not
already understand this they will
understand it at no distant da3-."
The editor of the Polaris has lived
to very little purpose in this world
if he has not learned that false
hood, malice and injustice always
hurt tho cause they aim to help.
There is something in it, but the
man that wrote it does not know
how little.
One of tho most inconsistent
things wo havo lately noticed is
the argument of the Standard that
tho House of Representatives
should be contracted instead of
expanded in numbeis. The idea
of having few representatives "is
essentially a Republican dogma;
ir the Democracy has any doctrines
at all, among them must appear
the idea of large representation;
and to bo consistent, if tho Stan
dard advocates Democracy it should
advocate a. large increase of the
number of men sent to represent
ike aation's millions at the national
Oregon Statistics for 1SS1-2.
CLATSOP COUNTY.
We arc in receipt of a compila
tion of statistics for tho current
year, respecting tho wealth of
our state. It is signed by R. P.
Earharl, Secretary of State, and
bears date tho 10th inst. It ffives
the total number of acres of sur
veyed land in the state at 5,201,
654; in 'Clatsop county, G7,G12.
The aggregate value of tho entire
total Ts S28.280.847; of that of
Clatsop county, 8221,193. The
value ot town lots m our own
county is given as 8399,701; of
improvements. 411,335: of mer
chandise and implements, $593,
472; of moneys, notes and ac
counts, $317,642; of household
furniture, carriages, etc., 77,892.
The number of horses and mules
in this county is 2S1; their value
is reckoned at 11,500; the num
ber of cattle is 2,552; their .ilue
is computed to bo $38,4G7: t'n
number of sheep, 2,027; t'... u
value, 3,025; number of Logs?
777; value, $2,212. The gtoss
valuation of all the property in
the county is 2,076,022; the
amount of indebtedness fooisup
540,062, and the amount of ex
emption, S87,94S, leaving tho to
tal taxable property to be valued
at $1,448,612. The number of
polls is not given, probably ag
gregating 2,000; the amount of
state tax is -$7,967 35; the num
ber of inhabitants is set down at
7,222; the wealth per capita, ac
cording to these figures is $287.54.
There are 906 children of school
age in the county. In point of
population, Clatsop county stands
eleventh, in tho list of twenty-
flireo counties, Multnomah stand
ing first with a population of 25,
204, and Tillamook last with the
meager showing of 970. Accord
ing to the "wealth per capita" col
umn tho Multnomah county folks
are ahead, they Laving an average
sack of dollars to the amount of
$763 66 for each one; down in
this neck 'of woods Tillamook
county and our own do'not make
a very wealthy showing. Joseph
ine, county is lowest on the listj- if
communistic ideas in that county
were carried out to their logical
conclusion, each one would have
$190 25.
Tho gross valuation of all the
property of the state is set down
at S6,531,716 just about the size
of Jay Gould's pile; the number
of inhabitants is given as 174,767;
the aggregate amount of state tax
at $325,917 3S; the average wealth
per capita, $493 90; and the num
ber of children in the state, our
grand army of the republic, mus
ters 61,641.
Yn arc pleased to note that the
Oregonian says it is Km insane no
tion that Portland docs not want
the Columbia bar improved," and
that it is an ins me notion "that the
Oregonian opposes it." It is a
suprise to many who have read the
editorials in tho Oregonian that it
could recognize the existenco of
any place or project that could not
be disposed of with a sneer. The
hardest kind of ignorance with
which we ever had to deal, is that
peculiar phase of assumptive ig
norance which includes itself. If
that paper would help us in the
work of having the mouth of the
Columbia what it should be, it
would better display the attributes
of the greatness it claims, than by
silly captious snarliugs against
those that do not recognize its as
sumed superiority of brains or
understanding.
The loss of the Corsica, draw
ing only nineteen and one-half
feet of water, gn account of strik
ing.cn the bar while crossing at
high tide, gives us a better argu
ment for the improvement of the
bar than wo wjsh. Perhaps it is
not out of place to ask why tho
dragging is not continued on tho
bar, from appropriations made last
session of Congress, for the pur
pose of improving the Columbia
river bar.
Trie Northern Pacific Railroad,
asks for Government to take into
consideration tho fact that it in
tends to finish within two years.
