A petition is buing circulated and generally signed in Astoria, that the United States government be authorized by Congress to talce the-tnattor-of salmon .propagation i under national supervision. We are authentically informed' also, that the owners-"of the salmon hatchery on the Clackamas intend to, keep up the fish supply of the Col'cnribiaJ?he advisability of turn ing the matter over to the National government, will not be at present, discussed. We simply speak in this article of the matter in a gen eral way. All the old fished streams in the world have becomo nearly depop ulated of fish, "and it cannot bo rationally supposed .that a differ ent result could attend the catch of one and one-half miilions of salmon .yearly in the Columbia, unless thore is something done to protect the fish. 'Not only is this vast amount taken from the river, but those not caught are frighten ed and'scattercd so that their pow ers are, doubtless, greatly impaired. If the general government will stock Gshless streams why not pre vent. -other streams from losing their fish? If the Columbia river fisheries were all in one State or Territory it might witjj more propriety be urged that the State should bear the burden, but they are not. They are in two different jurisdictions, each governed by laws enacted at different times in different years. One is powerless unless the other . acts similarly, and the difficulties for prompt and harmonious action aro great. The great catch of salmon last-yeaHn both the Sac ramento ancUthe Columbia is at tributed artificial propagation. Nat five per cent", probably, "of the spawn jnatures in the natural way, while artificially, ninety per cent is said to-be hatched. It has been remarked that the Sacramento could bo so filled, with salmon as :to; obstruct navigation. If so, why nottfie Columbia? The feeding grounds and growing places are in the broad ocean; why then, could there not bo s-cnt into thex ocean such mvnads of young fish that when the' should return in three to five years to the streams of their birth ihsy would literally fill the waters? In early times when the fish were only taken in the rude man ner of the Indians, the salmon did fill the streams nnd crowd rrnny upon the banks, where they lay till theshorcs were lined with them. About Milwaukee, where now there is probabably not a salmon to bo found, they were yearsao inMhe fields, in the fences when ever a freshet caused an overflow. About' Oregon City and the Clack amas rapids fish" went to waste to the disgust of the neighborhood. It i9 not so now. . As the seven years from 1873 to 1881, were, prolific of centen nials, those hundredth anniversa ries are out of fashion. The latest thing is bi-centennials. Philadel phia is going to have a grand one next summer, and New Orleans announces that on the Oth of next April the Crescent city folks will celebrate the two hundredth anni versary of the discovery of the mouth of the Mississippi "river. And still from every side come notes of preparation for the com ing, political fight in this state. "We will -grow confidential, and tell our readers something they already know, viz: an office is a good deal bigger thing in the eyes ofti' professional politician than it is in the eyes'of the people who do the voting. Don't let this .elude your memory. Editor AstontAjf : The dispatches' would have it that Representative Page had in troduced a memorial from the As toria Chamber of Commerce ask ing that the Astoria laud jjrant be declared forfeited uilcs3 the road is built, in two years. There was no such memorial sent from here. We asked that the grant be deelared'forfeited im mediately -unless the- company would bind themselves to build within two years. "We have no idea of extending the time to a company that has not the least disposition to build the road. Our memorial puts it clear enough to anyone but a Washington City correspondent of the Associated Press. - Cumtux. Some enterprising hotel keeper in the Italian Alps, Finding busi ness rather dull last summer, de clared that he saw tears streaming down t lie cheeks of a holy stattio near by. Every one employed in the house saw them too, the won drous miracle was told abroad, and pilgrims flocked from firand away. The e. h. k. has cleared a hand some fortune, and gave the whole business away in a New Year's fit of repentance. Otrn friends in Oregon who sin fond of protection and havt- a loving regard for Eastern capital ists, can find comfort in the knowl edge that during the past three months the profits of a protected manufacturer in Meriden, Connec ticut, have been 1,200 per work ing hour. The women he 1m working for him are protected by wages of three dollars per week. Tnu.editor of the Walla Walla Statesman graciously informs an awaitinjj world that he lias "no dislike to the Columbia river bar, in particular."' This is reassuring. We expect to hear of no more rough weather off Fort Stevens for several days at least. Tug fact that an English pris oner while' under the-influence of ether, told of several criminal transactions in which he had been engaged, suggests to the scientists its enlistment as a detective ad junct." " In 18S1 there were 73,000,000 bushels of wheat shipped from the port of New Yerk: of that vast amount not a single bushel went in an American ship. This otssht to make protectionists happy.
