Fascination of Crime
There would seem to be in
many minds something resembling
fascination in some" great and
startling crime. While vet the
echoes of Guiteairs deed were
echoing-throughtttho nation,.4hc
press generally predicted, that he
would be the recipient of favors
from sentimental Tvomen and
mawkish men, and the prediction
has been verified. Now that he
' has been fouhd guilty tlift. scenes
so disgusting to all good tastes are
intensified. Judging from the
sickening expressions of sympathy
with tha wretch, it is probable
that the final act of the tragedy,
when he shall be swung into eter
nity will bo a sort of glorification.
In hundreds of cases with'n the
last dozen years, the display lia
been the same, and neither reason
nor ridicule has been ahle to pre
vent occurrences which should
consign all the participants to lun
atic asylums. There is some sort
of strong fascination about deeds
of enormity; a: healthy mind would
look upon the perpetrator with
loathing, but bne afflicted with
this mental disease will lose sight
of the depravity of the deed
through an assumed sympathy fot
the perpetrator- If the exibtinjr
tests of insanity, as given at mur
der trials benccepted, it is diffi
cult to see how a single one of the
persons who have been tendering
a sort of ovation to Guiteau, could
be punished, should one of them
take a notion to kill the prisoner
or one of his guardsmen.
Perhaps there is a morbid vein
in the mind of every man, but the
thought will come up that the
prevailing mental or rrforal disea&c
is the outcome of the vicious liter
ature of the day. The countless,
volumes of printed fiction detail
ing the adventures of imaginary
villains, and the highly embellished
reports of crimes 'actually commit
ted, all have 'a tendency to per
vert the sensibilities in the man .
ncr to J3v.hichf wcjjiave alluded.
There is too intimate a mental
contact befween tr.minals and
others; familiarity, with the ways
of the depraved, an acquaintance
with the thoughts and motives, as-
delivered through the medium of
the printing press havo been
spreading a moral disease. It is
preventing the decent 'administra
tion of justice, it has broken down,
to a great extent, the protection
which all should have in person
and property. The scenes in oui
court rooms would sometimes be
more fitting if ihey took place in a
mad house. Like other disease
which beepmc epidemic, this ma)
run its course. There is an anal
ogy between the laws which con
trol the body, and those which
govern the mind, and it is to be
hjped that this mental ailmen
will in good time disappear as
do kindred ills and other deadly
contagio-
At a niov.i... ..,,. u London
last Wednesd y to protest against
the outrages now being committed
upon Jews in Russia and Ger
many, the" Episcopal Archbishop
of Canterbury, tho Roman Catho
lic Cardinal Man ling and Baron
Rothschild took a prominent part.
Cardinal Manning spoke in favor
of resolutions declaring that the
conduct of those countries toward
their Jewish fellow citizens tpnded
to degrade those. governments in
the eyes of the world. Thi Eng
lish Government was Detitioned to
interposo its friendly offices should
occasion offer in behalf of the per
secuted Israelites. The present
conduct of the Russian and Ger
man governments toward the Jews
is without excuse or pal i tion in
this ce itury of enlightenment and
religious tolerance.

Desiocbatic papers in the East
are starling in earnest to work up
a boom for Tilden in '84. They
say that he -is -the only man that
the Democrats can elect 'fo' the

leave the party in a bad way if
Tilden should die.
