"V. Ks ' '& fc-v 0) tmmn - Vol. xvi. Astoria, Oregon, Sunday Morning, February 5, 1882. No. 107. "Ti? 0 1 maim ZACH. CHANBLER ON HATES A correspondent of the Boston Herald in a recent resumfc of an interview with Zachary Chandler, tells how the great Michigan stal wart felt toward the man whom he placed in the Presidential chair. In response to a statement of Hayes that it was "sentiment" that elected him President, Zach. said: "Hayes is just fool enough to think that it was a sentiment which elected him President. Sentiment came near defeating him for the Presidency. His nomination fell like a wet blanket upon tho party. it iook naru work and money to elect him. It cost much money and great effort to save him after the vote was cast. Had I not do clared promptly that he was elected, and stuck to it, even against strong opposition in our own party, he never would have gotten his seat. A day's hesitation would havo destroyed the fruits of our victory. Tilden's managers had dispatched a man to Florida to manipulate the result. It was necessary to have a man on the ground to see that he had fair play. We had to combat men with un limited cash in hand and willing to commit fraud to seat their man. "I sent a messenger there upon the instant, and he reached Florida in time to meet Tilden's man and thwart his wicked intention. I also sent others wherever it was neces sary, without a question as to the cost, and gave my individual check to defray the expenses. It was not for Mr. Hayes, but for the Republican party, that I did these things, although I then supposed him to be an honorable man and a true Republican. When the re sult had, been , determined, "nnd I footed up the cost, I found that I had drawn $37,500 from my private purse for the expenses thus in curred. Six of us divided this 137,500 between us. There was $5000 raised in New England for these expenses. Hayes never treated with common courtesy any of the six men who paid the bulk of this sum. Don Cameron, Levi P. Morton "and tnvself are three of tho six. During the State cam- saw Mr. Hayes and made a stata ment of the facts to him. Mr. Hayes replied, so Appleman told me, that he would see Mr. McCor- mick, who was then Assistant Sec retary of the Treasury, and have the delinqaent clerks pay up their campaign assessments. McCor mick was sent for, the notices were printed and ready to be distrib uted, but some of the President's advisers learning of the fact, and recognizing that it would not look well alongside of civil service or der No. 1, secured its withdrawal, and, when Appleman again ap proached him upon the subject, he said he was powerless to do more. He never offered to contribute anything toward it from his pri v.itn nurse, although I had been informed tlrnt lie had failed to pay anything from his own means to the campaign fund in Ohio tho year ho was elected to the Presi dency. Being in Washington some time after this occurrence, Appleman told mo the facts, and I gave him my private check to close the account. I did not intend to have it said that tho Republican party would no't pay its debts. The facts were laid bare, not from any personal disappointments or ani mosities, but simply to show the inconsistent dishonesty of a Presi dent who drew his salary every month in advance, to secure the interest upon it, or for fear some question as to his title might keep a few dollars out of his purse. He was also so meanly parsimonious that ho bought his table supplies from the Post Commissary so as to get them at cost price. Army officers have this privilege, and he secured it under a rather strained construction of the law, as Commander-in-Chief of the Army." Condensed Wisdom. paign in Ohio which preceded the national election, we were not only obliged to furnish the bulk of the funds for the campaign, but I had to send Win. E. Chandler out there to wake them up and help make their organization. We gave thousands after thousands of dol lars to aid their local fight, and much of it was given at Mr. Hayes' personal request. The drafts in some Instances were made payable to his order. I think $40,000 was so drawn. It took harder work and more money to elect Hayes President than any man that ever nncnnipd the executive chair. He knew, too, that a largo portion of the money he received for the Ohio campaign was raised by direct as sessments upon Federal office holders, for tho fact was communi cated to him. So all this semblance of virtue now shows him to be a contemptible hypocrite. After ho -was elected President there was an occurrence which demonstrates the absolute dishonesty of the man's present attitude more than all the other things in this ridiculous farce of civil service hypocrisy. Air. Appleman, who is Vice President of the Citizens' National Bank at Washington, and Treasurer of tho National, Committee, found him self nearly $4,000 short of money to defray the running expenses of the committee. This, after wo Had settled up the $37,500 it took to make Haves President, after the vote was cast. Appleman called mv 'attention to it. 1 said, suppose A - -,. .President about it. He Belief is not in our power, but truthfulness is. Some men's attack is safer than their protection. A man oftou stubs his too on the threshold of success. True wisdom, in general, con sists in energetic, determination. Tho grumblers never work, and the workers never grumble. Mystery always magnifies dan ger as the fog magnifies the sun. Consolations console only those who are willing to be consoled. We are never ruinned by what wo want, but by what we think we want. If you aro asked to do some thing your shortest answer is to go and do it. Economy is no disgrace; it is better living on a little than out living a great deal. If you would not have affliction visit you twice, listen at once to what it teaches. Those who think- that money will do anything, may bo suspected of doing anything for money. There aro men to whom wo can not possibly give enough to pre vent them from demanding more. Iron is tho most- strongly united in the fiercest flame, and the same is true of valuable friendships. It is with you as with plants; from tho first fruit they bear we learn what may be expected in the future. It is a groat deal easier to build castles in the air when you aro young than it is to livo in them when you arc. old. The proper way to check slander is to despise it; attempt to over take nnd refute it, and it will overrun you. Never give a present with a string attached to it as it you Nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes. It is an admitted fact that men who uso their brains live longer, other things being equal, than the men who do not. The only man who is absolutely sure that he is always in the right is the one who is known to be ignorant and narrow. Riches are often thorns that pierce the head with cares in tho getting thorn, and heart with griefs in tho parting with them. Give even an angel a bad name, and tho simplest of us can see tho evil expression in his face, whether it is there or not. The men who have "a great mind" to be honest generally suo ceed. It is the man of small mind who yields to temptation. The time spent in reading books that do not make us think is worse than useless. One good book, however, is food for a life-time. Pleasure may aptly be compared to many very great books, which increase in real value in just the proportion that they are abridged. Investigation frequently leads to doubt where there was none be fore. So much the better. - If tho thing was not true,- inquiry can do no possible harm. If in your domestic life you would be supremely happy you must not forget the old adage, "The husband must not see nnd tho wife must be blind." The best people need afflictions for trial of their virtue; How can we exercise tho grace of content ment if all things succeed well; of that of forgiveness, if we have.no enemies? Never forget that it is your duty to laugh whenever you find any thing to laugh at. "A good laugh," so says Charles Lamb, "is worth a hundred groans in any state of the market."
