Liberty Hall wjs crowded last even

Howe's minstrels in their specialties
ind delightful character sketches.
Long before eight o'clock thcro was
but standing room, and when the cur
tain nnoit was to the largest audi
ence ever gathered there. The even
ing' entertainment wis opened with
aw olio, tnompson, iriiourt, .ueariu
and Smith, end men, Joe Taylor in
the middle, or "interlocutor," as the
programme hath it. The "Ancient
order of the full moon,"' a clever cari
cature, wound up the first part, and
after a brief prelude of orchestral
music Miss Lottie Allen, in her great
song and dance, "Tho Marriage
Bells' captured all hearts by tho
music of her voice and graceful move
ments in tho dance. Tho favorite
plantation sketch, "Old Black Joe,"'
who hears tho angels calling, and tells
them he's "a coming," was well ren
dered by Mr. Thompson, and then
came tho great jockey clog, under the
direction of Henri Stewart. The do
lighted encores of the audience evinced
their pleasure at this part of the per
formance. The quartette was unique,
as was Sam Disarm with His wonderful
array of instruments, and the solos
he contrived to execute upon these
original affairs that he twanged and
blew, was a now feature to many,
"The Last Sensation," and "Walking
for dat Cake," two intensely funny
features, closed tho entertainment.
To-night there will be an entire change
and some now and special features
neTer before seen here will bo presented.

The N. P. R. E. Co. have issued a
book shaped circular which contains a
considerable general information
about tho country through which
their road is to pass. It also contains
a map of thecountry between tho Pa
cific ocean and Lake Michigan, show
ing the routo of the road.. According
to this map, says tho Standard, the
road is to bo built on the north side
of tho Columbia and over tho Cascado
mountains from 'Ainswoith to
Tacoma. The big cities in the dim,
distant future of Wallulo Junction
and Ainsworth are properly located on
the map. So are Kalaraa and Wilke
son, but Seattle and Walla Walla are
blotted out, and Portland is off on a
side track, like the last rose of sum
mer, left blooming alono.

Skipped Out.
Among tho twenty "passengers on
the last steamer for Sail Francisco,
was one J. R. Sheppard, a painter of
Oregon City, and sinco his departure
a dismal howl arises to heaven from
the precincts of that quaint old city.
The reports of his croukuines3 come
in thick and fast, aud though nothing
new has developed yot, says the Stan
dard, since his exit, his record is
blotched with points that would out
tit a Police Gazette drama, if they
were brought to the suniight. Ho
left Astoria on tho jump and went to
the Dalles, where he was hailed as
tho husband of tho woman ho was
living with. Then ho escaped with
his life from the heat and dust of
that picturesque city, but was over
hauled at Vancouver by the sher S of
Wasco county for debt, which he was
forced to satisfy before ho could pro
ceed. He then dscended like a. dew
drop into that much maligned village,
Oregon City. Ho behaved himself
pretty well for this country and age
for some time, but his habit of wear
ing his hat over his loft ear was a cir
cumstance against his character. The
closing scenes in his career in tho val
ley are making his friends and ac
quaintances knit their brows. Nu
merous creditors look with longing
eyes after his fleeting form and wish
that he would not thus leave them in
despair. Some days ago his paint
shop burned, aud in it was consumed,
so ha says, considerable money be
longing to the A. O. U. W., and oth
er funds, but a subscription was raised
for him, and he turned it over to the
lodge. Only two things can bo said
of him; one is, that he is a fraud, and
other, he is gone.
Council Proceedings.
An adjourned meeetiug of the
City Council was held last Wednesday
evening. Yarious reports of commit
tees were read and referred. An or
dinanco was passed, and various
claims allowed. Under the head of
unfinished business the Mayor placed
J.' G: Hustler in nomination for City
Treasurer, C. W. Laughrey for Chief
of Police, and Chas. Rohr for Street
Superintendent. The nominations
were confirmed, and the Council ad
journed. . .

Railroad Combination.
From the Standard we learn that
the Union Pacific has concluded an
arrangement whereby tho Northern
Pacific will have tho right to lay and
use a third rail from its line to Butte
City, foriy-fivo miles, and that the
Union Pacific shall lay a third rail on
the Northern Pacific from the junc
tion to Helena. Both companies will
then have equal rights to Helena and
Butte City and will mako the same
through rates from these points.
Secretary Kirkwood iu his letter ac
companying papers received by tho
Sunnto on tho 21st in regard to the
Northern Pacific land grant, says: "1
have the honor to transniit herewith
the report of tho commissioner general
of the land office on thesubject. From
this report it w:ll bo seen that patents
for lands hi Olympia district, Wash'
ington Territory, were issued on the
8th of April, 1880, for 3,016 8-10 acres
opposite a portion of tho road con
structed by said company previous to
1875. No patents for lands have been
issued for 475 miles of said road con
structed, examined and accepted in
1880 and 1881."

Warden Hayden, of Ilwaco, -who ac-
cideutly shot himself last Saturday
while loading his revolver, is still lying
dangerously ill at the Parker hntue,
but though the bullet has not yet been
found, tho doctors in charge say that
they think his recovery probable. On
Wednesday two pieces of tho skull
were removed, and yesterday it was
thought that tho patient was sufficient
ly milled to attempt the extraction of
