False Inspiration.
It is saM tiiat tliero is but otic
step from the sublime to the ri
diculous; and with equal truth it
could be asserted that the sublime
in this world is always traduced by
the mimicry of the infernal. Ac-
cording to thesin'cere judgment
. of many of the grandest minds of
- humanity,'there were, in the long
ages past, seasons of divine inspir
ation, when the Deity not only
illuminatetl a few persons at dif
ferent epochs with his spirit, but
even dwelt in personal form "within
the mortal breast. The settlement
of this question has thus far been
monopolizod by the science of
theology, and may seem sacrilege
for anj one not a theologian to
discuss. Assuming it however to
be true, it certainly is a sublime,
factor in the problem of terrestrial
life, and should stand unique and
uncopied. There js too intense an
air of evident sacredness about it
to be lightly spoken of, or still
more lightly laid hold of by pro
misouo'ns individuals who claim
that, such attribute of divinity is in
them developed. And yet the
Titans once presumed to scale
Olympus and therefrom to steal
the lire of the gods. There is
nothing too high or sacred to daunt
men from assailing it. To save
life, to make money, win fame or
obtain authority, tlrere are those
who lay claim to be inspired by
the creator of tho- limitless uni
verse. The majority of the ignor
ant -will generally yield up all th'e
financial aud social force at their
disposal, when constrained by their
facile and innate susceptibility to
superstition. It is an illustration
that Darwin and 'Spcncpr in their
published works have -omitted to
prove the doctrine of the survival
of the fittest, that certain persons
of superiordynamic force and in
tensenessbf ego will feudalize a
thousand totheirsuzerainty. Des
potism in 'modern times, works
more in social parcels, and less in
national domains than formerly.
Claim on divine inspiration is not
a ncw.thjng nor is it confined to
any race or class of "people. The
Aboiiginc; of America had their
prophets, generally men. More
advanced races usually ascribe the
prophetic power to females. The
art of witchcraft was supposed to
have its most proficient professors
among "women- 'This singular fact
is probably due to the indistinct
conjectures obtained by men when
their attention was first directed
to the fame of women that first
rose frhadovv-likc in the gr.iy twi
light of civilization.
Chief among tho inspired frauds
of the present day is Guiteau, the
arch assassin of history. A fiend
who, unprovoked', could kill a hero
like Garfield could readily go one
step farther and traduce the God
of all by the accusation that He
was responsible for the murder.
It is only a succession of murder
by profanity and blasphemy. It
is not wholly impossible to arouse
the superstitions of an ordinary
American jury, and in this great
and diversified country filled with
men of all grades of mental power,
culture and enlightenment, there
arc thousands upon thousands who
are ready and willing to refer
everything they do not understand
to the agency of divine interposi
tion. There are in the United
'States to-day many terrible forces,
many horrible forms of growth,
much of which is the bitter fruit
of blossoms blown to us from
across the sea, but among all the
dark array there is nothing so
deadly, so poisonous and destruc
tive to tJur national life as the susl
ceptibility to superstition among
those whose condition renders pos
sible its growth.
The number -of insane persons
in the United States is reported to
Ue rapidly increasing. Probably
the actual state of affairs Is thnt
people are more carefully counted
now than they were a generation
sgo.
A S'ott Game.
Is ' these days of potty and
gigantic swindles, anything in the
way of a new trick, a fresh gouo
is looked upon with a certain
amount of interest. For this rea
son the latest invention in the way
of crime which comes from Dakota
has the invidious charm that nov
elty gives all enterprises of initial
character. A year ago the Dakota
territorial legislature organized a
new county Douglass acting in
the matter upon affidavits which
are now shown to be false. In the
fledgling county there are forty
voters, good men and true; the
taxable property of the county
aggregates 812,000; but a few of
the "leading citizens" who have
the bump of organization well 'de
veloped, have" had themselves
elected to fill the county offices,
have issued 200,000 in bonds, and
sent them in the regular orthodox
way to New York to be negotiated.
It is no new thing to issue fyogus
stock, but Solomon to the contrary
notwithstanding, the spectacle of a
lot of .swindlers fraudulently or
ganizing a county on American
territory for thr purposes of plun
der, is something new under the
sun.
Tnn Indians have very nearly
exterminated the .buffaloes on "the
great plains," and they are killing
cattle owned by settlers on the
border. They must work, steal or
starve. They will not starve so
long as there are cattle in sight,
and they do not work because the
Government has never made them
realize its necessity. They will
commit depredations, bringing
punishment upon themselves, but
the pnblic conscience cannot place
all of tho responsibility upon them.
The national wrong to the red men
is hardly inferior in degree to the
great wrong which was perpetrat
ed upon the blacks.
The continuance of John Kelly's
political life illustrates how hard
it is to got rid of "boss" rule in
politics. Though defeated, yet
the Tammany chief seems to have
mere political power than any
other man in the Empire State.
At present he sends to the legisla
ture men whom he 'moves like
puppets to do his bidding. When
ever he becomes irritated with his
Democratic friends he is in a posi
tion which enables him to sell out
to the Republicans, and so spems
to indefinitely preserve the politi
cal balance of power.
The following is the estimated
area .in acres of coal lands yet re
maining the property of the
United States: Washington Ter
ritory, 82G.CS0; Oregon, 414,535;
California, 240,020; Colorado,
1,127,025; Utah, 2,7G2,C20; New
Mexico, 10,000; Wyoming, 42,000;
Dakota, 50,000; Montana, 50,000.
No coal has yet been discovered in
Arizona or Nevada. The coal
bearing rocks of Nebraska, Indian
Territory and Arkansas cover the
respective areas of 3,000 and 1 3,-
G00 square miles.
Complaint is often made that
the life of the present generation
has too much of scramble in which
the most unscrupulous or the most
audacious usurp the places" of the
best and wisest, and that science
and morality will, consequently,
be dragged down to an ignoble
level. But those things may safelv
be left to take care of themselves
The doctrine of natural selection,
the "survival of the fittest," ap
plies as well to the mental as the
physical world.
Well, if our country does go to
war with Chili, or England or any
other naval power, the fleet that
fires upon Astoria must not draw
more than twenty-four feet of
water. Perhaps the wily Chilians
are waiting till the bar is improved
before issuing their declaration of
war. Quion sahe?
Gekmaxy is agitating the mat
ter of protection. Statistics fur
nished by different Chambers of
Commerce throughout tho empire
show an entire unanimity of opin
ion in relation to the stagnation of
nearly all branches of trade and
manufactures.
