Mrs. S. C. White "writes .to tho
Standard from San Francisco that she
was one of the five women three of
whom were married and two single
who came to Oregon from Boston for
the Methodist mission in 1830. One
of those single ladies married the Rev.
Jason Lee, and died in little over a
year, and the rest have all pissed
away except the old lady in question.
Under date of Jan. 15th mr Til
lamook correspondent writes that the
schooner Alpha arrived in Tillamook
on the 13th after a long stay iii Asto
ria and Baker's bay on account of
stormy weather. The people were
very glad to see her as they were out
of provisions. Sho discharged all her
freight in good order, and is now load
ing butter and salmon for Astoria and
Portland.
Lynched.
The assassins who brutally murder
ed George B. Reynolds, in Seattle,
last Tuesday night, and -Ben. Payne,
the alleged murderer of Officer Spires,
who was killed while on duty last
October, netu lynched by a vigilauce
commitiec composed of Seattle's citi
zons last Wednesday morning. The
two former, Sullivan and Howard,
were being given a preliminary exam
ination in the justice court, and upon
its conclusion and before the officials
could interfere, they wero overpower
ed, the prisoners carriod outside,
where a temporary galIow3 had been
put up, and in a few minutes their
lifeless bodies were swinging from the
cross beam. No sooner was that done
than four hundred men marched to
the county jail, toie down tho doors,
took out Payne, and in less time than
it takes to write it, according to the
dispatch from which wo quote, he also
was strung up. The feeling in Seattle"
can best be shown by tho fact that the
Coroner's jury, in their verdict upon
the bodies, said: "We are satisfied
that in their deaths substantial and
speedy jnsttcehas been subserved."
Suicide.
A. A. Colin shot himself through
the head in Siu Francisco List Wed
nesday afternoon. He was ell know n
here, having been for many years the
agent of the Alaska Commercial com
pany. About five weeks ago he wont
into partnership with C. Leinenneber
in tho tannery, but on the 1st inst.
the partnership was dissolved. Ho
was married a few weeks ago in Port
land and went down to San Francisco
with his bride on the Oregon on the
11th inst. It is thought that despon
dency in business caused the taking of
his life, as he was short in his ac
counts, and unable to retain the posi
tion he had held so long. Tho feeling
hero among his friends and acquain
tances is one of regret.
Masquerade Ball.
The boys of No. 1 , intend giving a
select masquerade ball on tho 14th
of February, and from the character
of the gentlemen who have charge of
it, it will be evidently an occasion of
pleasure and satisfaction. Particular
care will be taken as to the admission
of unwelcome personages, and we are
a'sured by meinbsrs of the committee
that ihey intend the ball will be up" to
the finest ever given hore.
The weather-boarding is being put
on the Pythian building, and consid
erable work is going on on the inside.
When completed it will be a handsome
structure, and an ornament tn tho city.
Carl Adler received a nofo from
F. W. Stechhan yesterday, stating
that a big minstrel company would
show here next Friday and Saturday.
The company include Emerson's
twelvo clog dancers, and other fea
tures of special merit. Further par
ticulars will doubtless be given in a
day or so.
Speaking to Capt. Storratt, of the
Lovi P. Burgess, who camo in tho
other day on the tug Brenham, in re
lation to the detention of his vessel
outside, ho said what everyone knows;
that "no amount of tugs could get my
vessel in during such rough weather;
Jhe tugs are doing all they call; the
troublo is there isn't enough water on
the bar." It is now in order for tho
Oregonian to severely call tho captain
a "critic," and crush him by writing
an article on "Tho game of greed."

Colunibta Salmon In New Zealand.
Wc are in receipt of a-volumo of
reports from United States consuls in
all parts of the world. Consul Griffin,
writing to our government from Auc-
iland, Now Zealand, m referenoe to
canned salmon, says:
"There was at the same time (1370)
a notable increase in tho trade in
American canned vegetables, nlulo
the American salmon soon drove all
other from the market The English
exporters, however, continue to send
varioiu kinds of preserved fish here
such as sardines, herring, etc., but the
United States now enjoys a complete
monopoly of the salmon trade of New
Zealand. The American salmon is
imported principally in oue-pound
tins. The duty charged on it, is two
cents per pound.
The wholesale price of good Colum
bia river salmon in Auckland varies
from 1.75 to 82.10 per dozen one
pound tins, duty paid. They uro
packed tn cases, each case containing
about four dozen tins.
Ft sometimes happons tlut Colum
bia river salmon turns out badly. Not
unfreqiiently tainted fish aro put up
ami sometimes the packers fail to
completely exhonst tho air before the
cans aro hermetically sealed. If the
air is not exhausted the can will be
come blown and of course the fish
spoiled. Tho importors of Columbia
river salmon tell me that they cannot
give preference to any particular
brand. If n shipment of a 'favorite
brand should turn out bad the con
sumer ia afraid to trust the brand
again, and it is almost certain to be
driven from tho market. Sometimes
the American packers label fish taken
from Rogue, Alaska and Sacramento
rivers, as Columbia river salmon.
These goods are shipped here and
sold at rcduceil rates, but as they are
of Indifferent quality they are calcu
lated to injure tho trade in the gen
uine Columbia river salmon."
Then follows a table showing the
value of salmon imports since 1870.
In 18S0 New Zealand imported sal
mon from hero to the value f $71,800.

the foregoing amounts are the sums
recommended by the engineers' de

The Oregonian is much troubled
about tho size of tug boats at the
mouth of tho river. Tn some res
pects larger tugs would be bettor,
provided the bar should be im
proved so that largo vessels could
come here. But tho Oregonian
would serve the farmers better if
it would devote n little more time
towards advocating the improve
ment at the mouth of the river
so that tugs could be dispensed
with and the vessels sail in and
out. Improvement of the channel
would bo better than some new
pilot bill to give Portland a mon
opoly with its two iron tugs. kx.
