FRIDAY ...
JAN. 20, 1882

-Editor.
There aro now two large ships
on the way to T&coma with rail
road iron which -wo would liko to
load at Astoria, but we will prob
ably bare to wait until three large
tugs come on to the bar before
they can cross out with a full load.
They are the Iroquois and H. S.
Gregory, each drawing 25 to 26
feet. It is well that larger and
more powerful tugs are coming to
work on the bar, for then we be
lieve that Portland people will
join us in trying to get the bar
deepened. Yes, after they have
sunk two or three ships in trying
to take vessels across a shallow
bar. Every tug that comes here
puts another foot of water on the
bar.
The Standard is of the opinion
that M. C. George's bill "provid
ing that all lands hereafter grantod
to aid in construction of railroads,
which shall not be taken up by
building of the roads before the
first day of January, 1885, shall be
declared forfeited and open to
settlement," is nothing more than
a shallow device to give the North
ern Pacific railroad another exten
sion until 1885, in which to earn
lands fairly forfeited July 4, 1877.
Wait a little: give him time to
show his hand before deciding
such a point. If it be
were a grievous fault."

Among the schemes which will
come before the present congress
is one to connect the Mississippi
river and the lake system by a
canal between the Illinois river at
Hennepin, to Rock Island on the
Mississippi. The distance is only
sixty-five miles, and the estimated
cost is $3,000,000. A strong lobby
has been formed at Davenport and
Chicago, and money has been
raised to press the scheme. Its
opponents say that it will cost
from $20,000,000 to $50,000,000,
and find that it is utterly imprac
ticable. Aeemnant of Sioux refugees
in Oak River, Manitoba, are solv
ing the vexed Indian problem in a
manner that should be mutually
satisfactory. They were originally
a part of Sitting Bull's band, but
when he surrendered they refused
to come in. The chief is White
Eagle, the warriors number 200;
they are living peaceably, culti
vating the soil, and unless mission
aries or Indian agents should strike
them in the next dozen years, will
doubtless do well.
It Is reported that the Flathead
Indians in Montana have ordered
the Northern Pacific surveyors at
work on their reservation, to cease
operations, and compelled them
by menaces to obey. The Indians
have defied the authority of their
chief, who gave the surveyors per
mission to run their lines, and are
collecting at a point thirty-five
miles west of the Missoula, with
the avowed purpose of preventing
the iron horse from entering their
land.
To be truly consistent the pro-
tectionist ought to insist on a tariff
duty on immigration. There is an
incongruity about taxing iron and
admitting flesh and blood duty
free; in protecting capital and not
protecting labor; if is a discrimi
nation of the poor against the
rich, and is becoming so manifest
that it must soon yield to public
opinion.
The cost to the Beecroft in de
murrage and interest on cargo,
for having to wait so long before
going to sea, amounts up to over
six thousand dollars, or twice as
much as it would take to tempor
arily deepen tho bar across the
middle sands with the scraper
There's another article on the Co
lumbia river bar.
The New York penitentiary
pays the state 83000 a month prof
it orer all expenses.

Efforts, having the probability
of success, are boing mado to in
troduce carp into Oregon waters.
This fish will probably live and
thrive in warmer water and upon
less food than almost any other,
but to have it of the beBt flavor
and in best condition for the table,
it is only reasonable to suppose
that, for a while at least, before
being brought to suoh use, it
should have lived in tolerably clear
water of moderately low tempera
ture with a sufficient supply of
suitable food. Carp-raisers can,
with little difficulty, arrange their
ponds so as to keep those intended
for market or their own tables, in
the coolest, freshest water, and
supply them with a sufficiency of
such food as is best calculated to
give the flesh firm texture and
good flavor. .
Ax interesting assertion regard
ing nomenclature) is made in refer
ence to tho present speaker of the
house. It is asserted that his
grandfather came from Ireland to
America ana tnat nis name was
McKeever, a common name in
County Down. The speaker's
father, not liking the distinctive
Irish prefix, dropped it, and was
known as Keever. The speaker
himself, wishing to couceal tho
fact that he was of Irish origin, it
is alleged, changed the orthography
to Keifer, holding out the idea that
he came from Pennsylvania Dutch
stock. So that if the statement is
correct, the right way to spell and
pronounce his name would be "J.
W. McKeever."
Though in general we depre
cate interference with the regular
forms of justice, yet there are oc
casions that demand prompt ven
geance; and in the triple lynching
at Seattle last ednesday, we
recognize an instance in which a
community did just right in twist
ing, the necks of men who by
their deeds had forfeited the
right to live.
Ik the dodges practiced by im
migration agents the Canadian
Pacific folks are ahead. Sections
of the prairie sixteen feet square,
are taken up along the railroad
liw, and carried bodily to Eng
land, and glass jars filled with
black loam are also sent to show
what the soil actually is.
The tomb of Garfield is kept
constantly covered with flowers,
which are renewed daily. The
funeral car stands within a glass
house at the base of the hill on
which the monument is to be
placed, and is guarded by a de
tachment of United States troops.
Califoenia papers are inform
ing thpir readers, Republican or
Democratic as . the case may be,
that they must "organize" if they
want to win next fall. The cakes
and ale; the prospective bowl's of
soup are already occasioning con
cern to the ins and the obts.
The woman suffragists have no
cause to be enthusiastic over the
promotion of Judge Gray to the
United States Supreme Court. He
made a decision a few months ago
refusing to admit a woman to
practice in the Supreme Court of
Massachusets.
The Utah delegate dispute is
to be settled by refusing a seat to
either claimant. It is thought that
that will establish the fact that a
polygamlst cannot have a seat in
Congress, nor can a man who wa3
not elected.
Under the present regime ship
building in the United States
threatens to become one of the
"lost arts." During '81 only
eleven sea going yessels with an
aggregate burthen of 3,480 tons,
were launched in- the district of
Boston.

The So; of 1S88 was a newspaper of r. new

a multitude of the superfluous words and
