sued at the As'toria post office shows a
large increase in the local businoss
from time to time, and will, wc be
lieve compare favorably with the
amounts issued in other towns of As
toria's size on this ceast:

This does not include the foreign
business, which is also quite large.
A recent legal decision says in
effect that the lending of money is
"business" within tho meaning fj,,ho
statute, and presumptively illegal.
Any party desiring to bring himself
within tho ccepti 11 of tho statute has
the burden of doing so. The fact that
a person borrowing money on Sunday
retains it and conterts it to his own
uso does not raise an implied promise
binding in law and upon which an ac
tion can be maintained.
Astoria's needs aro many; somo of
them can afford to wait till the de
mand is greater; some of them aro im
perative; among the latter class is the
matter of school houses. The proscnt
apologies aro inadequate, unsightly
and discreditable. In all organized
communities the appearance and gen
oral condition of the school buildings
is an exponent of the place itself. 'Can
any citizen of Astoria look with prido
upon the present buildings by court
esy styled "school houses'
The Oregonian makes tho edi
torial announcement that during forty
days that the Beecroft lay inside the
bar tho occasions in which itjjwould
have been impossible for her to go to
sea, wore ' 'comparatively brief." The
facts in tho caso are in direct opposi
tion to tho Oregonian's statement;
whether the facts or the statement
suffer thereby 13 for those who know
to decide!

company has, within a month, had
325 miles of new road accepted by tho
United States Go eminent 100 miles
111 Dakota and Montana mid 225 miles
in Washington and Idaho Territories.
By this acceptance the company ac
quires 5,709,000 acres of agricultural
and timber lands in Washington and
Idaho and 2,500,000 acres of farming
and grazing lauds in Western .Dakota,
in nil 8,520,000 acres.

tor Grorcr presented a memorial from
the Astoria Chamber of Commerce
and petitions from many citizens of
Oregon, urging that the unearned por
tion of the Oregon Central railroad
land grant bo restored to the public
domain.
One thousand and thirty-onu votes
were cast in Garfield county last'Mon
day on the county seat issue. There
wore four points aspiring for tho
honor, Pomeroy and Pataha City be
ing the principal ones. Pomeroy beat
the othere about one hundred and
twenty votes and was the viotor.
The annual production of the pie
cious metals in the States and Territo
ries west of tho Missouri river, inclu
ding British Columbia and receipts at
San Francisco from tho west coast of
Mexico, as reported to Wolls, Fargo &
Co., are: Gold, $31,869,086; silver,
45,077,829. California shows an in
crease in silver nnd decrease in gold,
Nevada shows n falling off, while Utah,
Colorado and Arizona, Bhow an in
crease. The Astoria Chamber of Com
meroc lately petitioned for a signal
station on Tillamook Rock, and also
telegraph wire by way of Fort Ste
vens. This was in accordance with the
recommendations, of tho chief signal
officer. Since then the Portland
Board of Trade have recommended
that Cape Hancock be substituted.
Wo fear that too many cooks will spoil
thu broth and no signal station will bo
the result.
