At S. Amdt & Ferchen'a is an
anchor, the invention of Mr. Ferchen.
The stock slides in a ring so that it
may bo folded beside the shank. The
single arm plays through a slot in the
shank so as to catch either side up the
anchor. The inventor has tested the
anchor and claims it cannot be fouled.
A patent has been appliedfor.

The Executive Committee of the
Evangelical Alliance recommend the
following programme for the annual
Week of Prayer:
Sunday, Jan. 1. Subject" for dis
course; "Renewed Consecration."
Monday, Jan. 2. Thanksgiving for
tho blessings, temporal and spiritual,
of the past year, and prayer for their
continuance.
Tuesday, Jan. 3. HuiniIiahorinnd
confession on account of individual,
social and national sin.
Wednesday, Jan. 4. Prayer for
the blessing of God and His Church
and His Word.
Thursday, Jan. o. Prayer fer the
young and all agencies for Christian
training.
Friday, Jan. C. Prayer for tho
universal prevalence of peace and
righteousness.
Saturday, Jan. 7. Prayer for Chris
tian Missions, tho outpouring of the
Holy Spirit, and the conversion of the
world.
The above having been .adopted by
the Evangelical churches of Astoria,
and union services will be held every
evening beginning at seven o'clock.
The last witness for the prosecu
tion in the Guitcau trial was on the
stand last Friday.
The case of Theodore Mitchell vs.
Charles Woods to recover ?1G 50, was
tried before Justice Fo yesterday.
Tho jury found for the defendant in
the sum of 5 00.

One young gentleman had started
in on his New Year's racket rather
early judging from his appcaranco last
night. His explanation was that the
boys had bet tho whisky and got him
to hold the stakes.

During 1880 sixty-three vessols
cleared from the Columbia river ior
foreign ports; during 1881, one huii
dred and twenty-six vessols cleared
from the Columbia for foreign ports.
The value of the. foreign shipments
for '80 (exclusive of lumber) was
$4,181,352. The value of the foreign
shipments for '81 (exclusive of lumber)
was 37,114,510.
An East India piano cover beautifully
embroidered, will be raffled at the Occi
dent next week. Tho cover is worth
S125 and the fortunate man can get it
for one dollar. This is a rare opportu
nity. There is a general kick all over
Washington Territory about the new
Sunday law. The way to insure its re
peal is to thoroughly enforce it. Cin
cinnati passed a Sabbath ordinance a
few years ago, and the Mayor deter
mining to act according to the letter
as well as the spirit of the law, notified
all the sextons, Sunday school teach
ersj ministers, bakers, telegraph opera
tors, railroad employes, choir singers,
.otc., that any attempt to exercise
their vocations, would render them
amenable to the law, and he would be
obliged to act. -The law was repealed
at the next meeting of the Board of
Aldermen.

fore getting to the second; and then:

The stockholders of tho Fisher
mens Packing Co. held their sixth
annual meeting at their office at up
per Astoria, Oregon, on the 23th day
of December, 1881. The meeting
passed off in a v cry quiet manner,
with brotherly lovo and good feelin:
towards one another. All discussions
on matters of importance was con
ducted quietly and with good feoling
toward each and every one. Tho now
board of directors consist of. the fol
lowiug.nained gentlemen: A. Heiden,
Benj. Young, A. Young, Robt. John
son, and Robt. Hamilton; Mr. B.
Young and Mr. A. Heiden being re
elected, Mr. Benj. Young remaining
secretary of the company. Mr. Robt
Johnson was elected president for the
ensuing year
