names are forever stricken from
the muster rolls of duty, and who
are content to slip down the back
entry of time to an oblivion of
musty forgetfulness, the clash and
clamor of a hundred tccples that
announce the Xew Year's birth, is
of neither note nor consequence.
To the active workers of the world
it is a matter of congratulation that
they live to see another Xew
Year's day and of good intent to
so live that should they happily
welcome its successor, it may be
indeed "a happy Xew Year."
fAew Year Soles.
Tiik celebration of Xew Year's
day is onn of the oldest as well as
most universal customs on record.
Its formal celebration was insti
tuted by the old Rom tii reformer,
Xuma Pompilius. who, in 713 B. C
dedicated .the dav to Janus. On
wines. Mechanics t began some
thing new in their trade and liter
ury men and artists also com
inenci'd some liew work. On that
dav, too, the -consuls took office.
J'roni this custom, uodouot, liowen

men and other potentates and dig
nitaries on that day. During Uie
time of the emperors two white
bulls were sacrificed to Jupiter

I'listom of making" Xew Year's
presents, i;j about, extinct in this
day and generation it tiever did
take well on " this coast; but in
olden tinea, chionielers. inform us,
it was carried to an amazing ex
lent. The orijrin of it is ascribed
fti Titus Tatius, king of the
bine"s. On bnoi occasion 'Titus
was presented vith some branches

strena, the gocliirss of stro'ith,

American of the day observes Xew
Years as best suits himself. A
careful abstinence from business
and a roving circuit of "calls"
usually takes up- his time, ending
sometimes in a '"call" on a flush or
straight, when the other fellow lias
a, pill hand and rakes in ,the ante
and accruing assets. One of the
best ways of celebratinsr Xew

our heathen co-laborers, the Chi
nese, who- pay. all their debts on
that dayand'if tliey can't do that
give up all .they have to their
creditors without the civilized pro
cess of going through bankruptcy.
Should Be Admitted
It would be but a matter or
justice to admit Washington into
the Union at this session of Con
grebs. Our sister Territory is great
in all that goes to make a Stato; in
i tion. and prospects. It has a hun-
asks for a State form of Govern
ment feeling that it would be an
advantage in a business way. Xe
vada, scarred and seamed by bar
ren wastes, a desert tract of
desolation, came into the Union
seventeen years agar with, a great
deal less than half the piesent
population of "Washington. It
came in as a party measure, to
give Lincoln three more elec
toral votes, and on any other
ground than that of political nc
ccssity had no business to set itself
up for a State. aslungton by
reason of its advantages has a plea
for admission that it may still
further foster .its prosperity and
help develop its rich resources by
a judicious and economical svstem
of home government.
Who, Though Dead, Yet Speafeetli.
The following is the peroration
of a eulogy on Garfield, delivered
by Senator Hoar in Washington
last Friday: The honors paid to
Garfield are the portent of a bet
ter age and a better geneintjon
against vulgar heroisms of the
past. Go through their mausol
eums and under their triumphal
arches and sec how the names in
scribed there shrink and shrivel
compared with that of this Chris
tian soldier, whose chiefest virtues
after all are of tho fireside and
family circle, and of a dying bed.
Here the hero of America becomes
the hero of humanity. Let us not
boast at the funeral of our dead.
Such a temper would be doubly
odious in the presence of such ex
pressions of hearty sympathy from
governments of every form; but
wo should be unfaithful to our
selves if in asking for this man a
nlace in the world's arallerv of
illustrious names, we did not de
clare that we" offer him as an ex
ample of the products of freedom.
Is not that country worth dying
for whose peasantry are of such a
strain, and is not a constitution
worth standing by, under whose
forms freedom calls such men to
her high place? Is not the union
worth saving which gives all of us
the property of countrymen in
such a fame?
