The State of the Case.
A Correspondent writing in
reference to the Astoria land
grant thinks we are'Hoo charitable"
in. saying that the railroad company
is not to be blamed for holding
on to the grant. It is far from
our intention to attempt any justi
fication of the course pursued by
the railroad company in this mat
ter; what we said and what is now
rpntyited is. that it is the jrovern-
ment that is to blame for allowing
such abuses to exist. Human
nature average Caucasian hu
man nature is to take advantage
of every good point, to make the
most of every opportunity, and if
the repressive power is unable or
unwilling to check the natural
grasping tondencj of mankind and
unkind, it is but in accordance
with poor humanity's impulses to
aoro-randize and hold. If our cor
respondent could fix matters so
that every one in his vicinity
would have to sell their butter to
him at his own figures, and could
also arrange it so that we
here in Astoria would have to buy
our butter of him at whatever
price he saw fit to ask, or go with
out, he would have "a good thing,"
and 'tis probable would feel justi
fied in getting up a little corner in
the butter business. But the abuse
would correct itself: the producers
tMBconsumers wouldn't stand it
fc railroad company stands be
tween the producer and consumer,
the government and the governed;
the grantor and the grantee; the
seller and tho buyer; the govern
ment is the stronger and should
abrogate all the acquired but for
feited privileges oE the party in the
manger. But if our public corpor
ations and other public servants
are allowed by lax masters to grow
insolent and unjust, the power that
made them must be looked to to
unmake them.

"The last is true. It is the most
remarkable case I ever heard of,
but it would not be right for me
to seek vindication through news
papers. I think in the end, how
ever, that every one will be satis
fied it has been a most difficult case
to handle."
Cos seemed to be fully aware of
the general feeling of discontent
at his treatment of the assassin,
but intimated that the end bf the
trial must furnish his vindication.
We note that the new plan ol
carrying grain to England from
San Francisco by steamers is on
the increase. The British steamer
Ceylon, Devonshire and Cascape
dia are on the way thither for
that purpose. The two last men
tioned ones are from Hongkong.
These steamers carry on the aver
age one half more than their
reo-ittered tonnajro. Steamers

have lately been offered to load at
Astoria with grain and would
probablj have been loaded hero
could their cargoes have been
brought down easily. .

Tun leading editorial in tho last

Statesman aims a cruel blow at
the cherished projects of the
Northwest by declaring, in refer
ence to the "channels below As
toria," that udredging cannot clear
those .channels permanently for
lanre ocean vessels' Who in the
world ever claimed that it could?
The V. AY. . might as well assert
that without moisture in the air
there can be no rain, or that peo
ple died in 18S1 that never died
before, or that however long time
endures, the waters of the Colum
bia will never run back to their
source. Another brochure from
the same articls says that "Clatsop
Spit is constantly wearing off and
the gult stream is forcing the sand
across the channels .and shoaling
them." It is equally true that the
gulf stream is packing its trunk
for'a trip to the moon, and on its
return the "ffulf stream" will close
out its Atlantic trade aud "go
west." The prime value of a state
ment is its" accuracy. The article
in question should be framed.
In reference to the Irish ques
tion the Pall Mall Gazette believes
it substantially true that the gov
ernment has divided the disturbed
localities in Ireland into five or
six districts, each of which is to be
under a superior sort of magistrate
who will be able to act without
previous superior sanction and
have eutire control of troops and
police in event of disturbance.

The Vidette declares that Jay
Gould, Russell Sage and Cyrus W.
Field, three of the railroad mo
nopolists, have got up a scheme
.to capture the property and grave
yard of "Old Trinity'" church, op
posite the head of "Wall street,
.New York. They intend, says
the Vidette, to use the grave
-yard- for a depot and side
tracks Cor their elevated railways,
and convert the grand old church
" into ra 'stock exchange. As they
cannot purchase the property from
Jthe present trustees, their scheme
is to 'turn- Episcopalian, pack a
church meeting, get themselves
elected trustees, and then sell the
'property .to. their corporations.
They would use the Tombs for safe
depositrvaults for their trust com
pany, and rub out the ten com-
mandmenta, which forbids the
" worship of false gods and the
comraisssion of theft. When these
men read the Vidette it is with
fear and trembling.
