N m TrrpN imiii gftc fiiltj sltrx&m. ASTORIA. OREGON : THURSDAY DEC. 22. 1SSI J. F. HAIXOK AX. ..Editor. An Eastern Taunt. The New York Maritime Reg' isterof theYth inst., is to hand with several articles marked in purple ink; one we published two days ago; the other, entitled "Charges upon shipping at Colum bia river, Oregon,1' is rather long to reproduce, It is based on a misconception and misstatement of facts. The argument takes for a premise, the letter recently written from this place by certain English shipmasters who felt ag grieved that their business was not transacted faster. From that letter the article goes on to say that "these are accusations that cannot be answered, because they are based upon facts." It is a matter of regret that any delay should occur, but, while the bar is in the condition it is, it is a question how it can be helped. There are fourteen vessels ready for sea lying here now that if once over the bar could proceed on their way; but 'tis loll' to prate about "facilities." The Columbia has been here since Monday last and hasn'l been able to go over the bar, though as far as "facilities" are concerned she is about as well equipped as a vessel can be; she is provided with a competent pilot, and is of comparatively light draught; and yet because sailing vessels drawing more water than she does are not taken out, comes a howl about "facilities." When lit tle 7x9 papers up the country blow about the "bar monopoly" a contemptuous silence is the best answer, but the New York Maritime Regihtrr, is a pow ful journal and its utterances de serve notice. It goes to every prominent port in the world and the article we arc discussing is unfair and illogical. That there ut6 serious drawbacks to the Co lumbia commerce it would be idle to deny; iicy are drawbacks and hinderauces that exist whether they were discussed or not. The prominent difficulty is the bar itself. Till the general govern ment, recognizing the importance, the absolute necessity of the measure, clears away the obstruc tion at the mouth of our river these objections will exist. But the unstudied utterances of dis contented parlies should not be made the basis of a wholesale charge against the existing order of rates and charges on the Co lumbia river. This, however, is more Portland's affair than Asto ria's. The letter alluded to was a growl at that place and men whose names are signed to that letter told us that as far as this place was concerned it was in their opinion impossible for the vessels to be got out any faster than they were. TIio Modem Aluddlu. 'i'he modern Aladdin was born in a Xevr England village; was early taujjht the lessons of thrift, went to the district school and learned to trade knives and marbles; was noted as n boy for ciiteness, and as a growing youth for being sharp at a bargain. He joined the village debating society, clerked in the village store, and when twenty-one went into busi ness for himself. He traded and amassed wealth and at. thirty was sent to represent his constituents in the Legislature. "While there he -lost no, opportunity of being useful to himself, und when he came hack he was pointed out to admiring urchins as a rising man. From there he branched out into .larger channels, got a share in a vessel, and a controlling interest in a bank, went across the sea, saw the museums of London, the palaces of Paris, the saloons of Vienna, the mosques of Constan nople and the walls of Damascus. .But vainly blew the south wind, vainly shone the stars and vainly the violets on the fresh, green rQ IMM turf gave out tbolr fragrance. : There was nothing in all that for j him. He came back and increased! his stere: lie brought back a Mrs. .,,,..,,. Aladdin with htm. He arrow stout aud loved an easy chair, where he could lean back after dinner and look at Mrs. Aladdin through tho blue cloud of his cigar. Ho went regularly to church on Sunday; by this time his head was sliiny with the sermons that had hit it and glanced off; he clasped his hands in prayer, and forget to open them when the contribution box was passed around. By and by old Aladdin died. The south wind, for whose breath he was never grate ful, blew over his grave; the vio lets, whose delicate perfume he never noted, exhaled their sweet odor above his head, and the stars, that he had never seen, shed a soft light upon his tomb that no lamp above a king's sarcophagus could equal, and as you and all of us sip eur morning coffee, we say: "So! Old Aladdin is dead! And, by the way, how much did he leave? Judsox Kilpatrick, who died at Santiego, Chile, on the 4th inst., in his first year of South Ameri can consulate life, made the ac quaintance of Henry Meiggs, the colossal contractor. Meiers he- came bankrupt while awaiting the closing of a bargain to partly grid iron Peru with railroad tracks, and he asked Kilpatrick to scrape to gether every dollar he could s;ot and lend it to him. Against the advice of his family Kilpatrick sent him $1,700 which he had in bank, and borrowed 100 to live upon until he drew his salary next time. Meiggs went to Peru, and a month later Kilpatrick received a letter stating that the contracts were signed, and including this pestscript: "Please find inclosed check for 5,000." Meiggs ctlTer ed Gen. Kilpatrick 25,000 a year to take charge of the men employ ed in the contractor's scheme. Another American accepted the offer while Kilpatrick hesitated, and Kilpatrick ever afterward said that his hesitancy vn the greatest mistake of his life. The man who undertook the duty is now a millionaire. Tub I.eipsic printers have jut celebrated the four hundredth anniversary of the introduction of printing into that place. It was in 1481 that Andreas Ereisncr, a professor of theolog set up the first printing press in Loipsic. He made a present of it to a monastery, on condition that ihe monks would pray for his soul. Now Leipsic has eighty-two printing establishments, with 451 steam presses, and 971 hand presses, giving employment to 13, 000 people. David Davis, acting Vice-President of the United States, has to sign two sets of vouchers for his salary. Five thousand dollars, his salary as senator, is paid him by the secretary of the senate; for the other three thousand dollars lie must ro direct to the treasurv. A ooon deal is being said at present about convict labor. There are two views to take of the sub ject, the sentimental and the practical; and the practical view is the correct one.
