The following petition lias been in
circulation in this county for the last
two menths:
To the Honorable, the Senate and
House of .Representatives in Con
gress assembled:
Whereas, the Congress of the
United States did on the 4th day of
May, 1870, pass an act granting to the
Oregon Central Kailroad Company
alternate sections of land situated be
tween McMinnvillc and Astoria, Ore
gon, on condition that a railroad
should be built, between said points
by said company within six years; and
WiiEitEAS said company has not
complied with the said provisions, and
docs not show an' disposition to build
such portion of the road as lies be
tween Forest Grove and Astoria, and
Wiiekeas, the unearned portion of
said grant lying between Forest Grove
and Astoria amounting to some 400,000
acres are still reserved to said com
pany, and the settlement of these
lands and the development of the
country is seriously embarrassed by
the withholding of these lands from
settlers.
Wherefork, 3'our petitioners pray
that your honorable body may pas3 an
act declaring the unearned portiou of
said grant forfeited, unless said Ore
gon Central Railroad Company or its
assigns shall beforu the 1st day. of
February, 1882, enter into a good and
sufficient bond with the United States
for the completion of said road within
two years from December Hist, 1881.
And as in duty bound we shall ever
pray. Every one signs it.

Mr. D. r. Thompson called on
us yesterday and .assured us ho was
going to Washington to labor for the
improvement and deepening of the
Columbia river bar, as well as the
river. He favors getting a separate
appropriation for the bar if possible,
if not all together, and insisting on at
least one half being expended on the
bar below Astoria. This he believes
to be Portland's interest as well as
ours, for Portland is really as much
interested as Astoria in getting the
bar improved.
Wo are in receipt of a pamphlet
which sots forth in ornate prose "The
Resources of Arizona.'' Arizona i3 a
splendid county to leave. A land of
horned toads, tarantulas, lizards,
cacti, sharp shining sand, gray moun
tains, quartz, grit, drouth and desola
tion; of ruins, ancient and modern. A
land where you plant corn with a
crowbar, cut hay with a hoe and fire
wood with a sledge-hammer. A land
that seems to be the jumbling to
gether of forgotten fragments of a
world-making; the only redeeming
feature about the whole thing being
the people. The pamphlet is pub

The Reason Why.
An up-river correspondent writes to
The Astoriax asking why a marriage
notice that ho sent down wasn't pub
lished. The reason is, that it wasn't
signed. Of course tho marriage took
placo, no loubt, but, iu those things
it is just as well to be positively sure;
for suppose it hadn't taken place, and
the announcement had appeared, 3011
sec it would be a a little awkward
for all concerned, for uo one more
than the newspaper that published
the statement. It may not be out of
placo in connection with this matter
to recall a little happenstance of years
ago. It wis in the fall of "75. iu the
Silver State, that we one day received
a note stating that on such a day Mr.
So-and-so was married to Miss Blank.
The note was unsigned, but fully be
lieving it to be bona fide, the marriage
notice appeared in our paper the nest
morning. Two days after, as Rob.
Simpson, the foreman, v. as making up
the forms for the outside, and Geo.
Gorman, the local, was getting out
some mining notes, the writer of this
article amusing Iiini3elf with some ex
changes, tho man whom we had an
nounced as being married, stalked iu
and asked in tones of wrath for "the
editor." We confessed to being that
unfortunate individual, n hereupon
the alleged groom denied the allega
tion and denounced the allcguior in
forcible and uncomplimentary terms.
He was mad from the ground up. lie
had been "gatheridg strength liko
gathering storm and nursing a wrath
to keep it warm." Tho more we ex
plained the madder ho got, and it
wasn't pleasant a bit. Rob., who is
now running the Ward Reflex in Ne
vada, and Geo., who still wields a
shears in Pioche, chipped in, but it
was no use. He just had so much to
say and he was going t say it. For
tunately he was a great joker, mid
when he had fumed and stormed for
twentj' minutes he began to see how
ridiculous tho whole thing was, and
before he left the office he was all
right; but, we made up our mind
right there to this one thin:: If a
man is going to get out of temper
about tho publication oi a marriage
notice, we'd rather it would be becnuso
we didn't publish an unsigned mar
riage announcement than because we
did.
