THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE OF
THE WORLD. ?
A writer in a recent number of
the Atlantic Monthly predicts that 1

tury the English language will be
spoken by 800,000,000 people oc
cupying, besides England proper
and its contiguous dependencies,
India, South Africa, Australia,
North America, islands in ewry
sea and naval stations on every
cape. IJy that time, it is thought,
so large a proportion of the busi
ness of the world will be done b'
masters of the countries named
that, as a mere matter of social
and commercial convenience, the
whole world will devote itself to
learning English. The language
spoken by other civilized races,
according to this anticipation, will
sink to the character of local dia
lects, which will gradually lose
their distinctive diflerences and
finally disappear altogether. Many
barbarous races would be drawn
into the prevailing cunent, so that
as is now the case all over
Europe then all over the globe
the Englishman will be addressed
in his own .speech.
The advantages to this end al
ready possessed by English-speaking
people are obvious. England
now controls in the four quarters
of the globe an area of 8.811,000
squure miles, with a population of
about 280,000,000 English com
merce, ideas, books and tongue
profit by thisbreadth of empire.
Our appreciation of the future of
the Anglo-Saxon race and English
tongue is hightened, however,
when we add to the English-speaking
area the 3,024,494 square
miles of the United States, with
their population of 30,155,86G
souls. No doubt the period is yet
very remote, and ma7 never be
reached, when English will become
the universal language of man
kind. The probability is that
many isolated races will never be
converted to its use. But when
an aggressive, energetic, commer
cial people, possessing so vast an
area into which to develop, is at
the same timp the wealthiest on
the globe and the most enterpris
ing and practical, it is difficult to
set limits to its future. The Ro
mans were able to impress their
laws and language upon the whole
of Europe, and Anglo-Saxon is
the Roman of the modern world.
In competition with the races of
the continent the English and
Americans possess the advantage
of beginning with 11,835,-! 94
square miles of the earth's surface
and the qualities which first gave
them this wide domain.
How to Make Yourself Unhappy.
In the first place, if you want
to nialce yourself miserable, lie
selfish; think all the time of your
self and your things; don't care
about anything else; have no feel
ings for any but yourself; never
think of enjoying a satisfaction o(
seeing others happy, but rather, if
you see a smiling face, be jealous
lest another should cnjo' what you
have not; envy every one who is
better off in any respect than
yourself, think unkindly toward
them and speak lightly of them.
Be constantly afraid lest some one
should encroach upon -our rights;
be watchful against it, and if any
one comes near your things snap
at them like a mad dog. Contend
earnestly for everything that is
your own, though it may not be
worth a pin. Never yield a point.
Be very sensitive, and take every
thing that is said to you in play
fulness in the most serious man
ner. Be jealous of your friends
lest they should not think enough
of you; and il at anr time they
should seem to neglect you, put
the worst construction upon their
conduct.
