Suicide.
At half past eleven yesterday morn
ing Dr. M. P. Jennings shot himself
in his office, northwest corner Cass and
Squeinoqha streets, inflicting a wound
that will in all probability prove fatal.
The bullet, which was from a re.volver
of 38 calibre, entered over tho left
terapb. Tho sad occurrence is a mat
ter of profound regret to all, he boing
universally known and esteemed. It
is thought that recent financial loise3
and mental depression prompted the
act. Near by was found n letter,
written in a cloar. firm hand, which
we cepy:
Astoria, Oregon, Dec. :s, 1881.
Dear Mother, sistors and friends. I

that you will nil take a philosophical
view of my death.
It will soon be far, far better with
me than it has ever been.
M. D. Jbnnixos.
Under his pillow was his office slato,
with tho words "Please bury me in

it. Ho was sinking rapidly last even

live till davbreak.

At La Center :i petition is being
circulated asking Congress for 810.000
to clear Lewis river of snags and bar?.
The Vancouver Independent says that
the river has already been surveyed
by Government engineers, and 10,
000 was their estimate of necessary
expenses. This properly expended
would clear the river so that light
draft boats could ascend to within
three miles of Chelatchie prairies.

Ablo writers have been employed
to go over every section of the coun
try and give its truo merits to the
world in newspapers, pamphlets,
magazines, and in such other ways, as
may properly represent the vast re
sources of the great Northwest.
Their efforts in this particular will be
a great blessing to the couutry, for it
needs to bo known to be appreciated.
W. S. Failing who went to S.m
Francisco a short time since to bring
up a lot of young black bas3 for Capt.
Ainsworth, returned on the Columbia
without tho fish. This failure says
the Standard, was owing to a habit
these fish havo of hibernating. In
eastern waters they disappear in No
vember, burying themselves in the
mud and in the crevices among the
rocks at tho bottom, from which they
emerge again in April. Mr. Failing
was well aware of this habit, bnt
thought that in tho mild climato of
California they would not go into
winter quarters so early. But the
fish evidently have a time table, as a
day's dilligent seining m Temescal
lake failed to secure a single specimen,
although only a few days beforo a
dozen or more were takon at each
cast.
