Failing who went to S.m Francisco a short time since to bring up a lot of young black bas3 for Capt. Ainsworth, returned on the Columbia without tho fish. This failure says the Standard, was owing to a habit these fish havo of hibernating. In eastern waters they disappear in No vember, burying themselves in the mud and in the crevices among the rocks at tho bottom, from which they emerge again in April. Mr. Failing was well aware of this habit, bnt thought that in tho mild climato of California they would not go into winter quarters so early. But the fish evidently have a time table, as a day's dilligent seining m Temescal lake failed to secure a single specimen, although only a few days beforo a dozen or more were takon at each cast. tooOdeg. south PaciSo, through i 15tm',;l -u" ; Trulhnj-er, trm-t of laud on Columbia of LeMaire. 13 dav. 1 13L "'" vr- " lJrMrano "e l" river 200 Fwt W ..j McCiurc's town ; equator to Columbi bar. 30!
