A Present Need.

cabinet system. & totally inade
quate to the present wants of the
country. The history of United
States cabinets YOuld, jf written,
be a curious one. From a trium
virate forming a .ort of second
Presidency in tlie early days of
the Republic, it grew to its present
inferior dimensioiand stopped
growing giving an illustration
of arrested development several
years ago. At present the sever
al secretaries -are so over
crowded vrith business in their
several departments that the
interests o -the country suffer
thereby- -Take for -instance, the
department of agriculture, tucked
away -in one corner of the jurisdic
tion of the Interior Secretaryship,
when, in point of fact, it should be
erected into" a .separate branch
and begiveri"by reason of its im-i
portance a secretary to manage j
and direct the agricultural inter
cuts of the country. The patent j
office, the Indian question, affairs
of internal, revenue are among
the many duties imposed upon the
ocretary of the interior, who, if
a common mortal, must, of neces
sity, neglect .some of his multifa
rious charges. An enlargment of
the cabinet is among the preying
necessities of the da'.
