He stands at the head nf his profession and the firm is the greatest combination of legal ability in Oregon. His friends claim that he can carry Multnomah county, which electa eight representatives next yasr m the face of all opposition even if it takes the form of open warfaie. He is slrong iii eastern Oregon, but no county be yond the mountains is likely to send a Republican to the legislature. Po liticans unfriendly to Senator Mitchell assert that if ho is put forwaid as a candidate, enough Republicans in Washington, Yamhill , Benton and Linn counties will slay away from the polls to insure the election of Democratic legisla tors. He has been in Wash ington since March 1879, and his law practice here is looked after by Mr. Ralph M. Dement, a young man of much promise and couitdcral.le abilty. OTHUK ASlMKlNTS. Mr. Henry Failing, one of the mot successful merchants tnd afterwards banker, of the metropolis, is men tioned as :i compromise cindidato. Though not a public uinii, in tho strict sense, he has no little kii wl-de of national aiiairs, i.s a, good parliamen tarian, broad and liberal in his iews, and as far as Oregon's commotes and material development in concerno-l, would make a very useful senator. Hon. W. D. Hare, ex-collector of customs nt your port, and Judge John Burnette, of Corvnllii, are also spoken of as candidates.
