Southard, 240 days from Philadelphia, arrived in yesterday, Columbia and Brenham towing. She hau been out side for nearly three weeks. Sho is loaded with iron for the N. P. R. R. From the Oregonian we learn that the steamers Salem and City of Salem, formerly the. property of the narrow gauge mil road, have been bought by Win. Reid. Tho f.itlner lut3 been leased for the upper Willa mette trade. The city of Salem haa been taken to Sleflin's ship 'ard in North Portland, where she will be re built and finished within two mouths. She will then be turned over to the Salem Mills company, of which Mr. Reid is president, to carry wheat from river points to their establishment. A gentleman iu this city .says a Seattle exchange, engaged in the sal mon business, recently bought a quan tity of fish from a down Sound pack er. Uefore taking them ho opened the barrels at both ends and found them to contain silver salmon. Just before shipping them to his aent at S.ui Francisco he got an intimation that the fish weie not the sauiu all the way through, aud an examination of two or three bat Ms demonstrated tho fact that silvrr salmon lml bee placed at bo,h ends aud fall or dog salmou in tho center.
