THE OLEOMARGARINE PERIOD
The-Burlingioii Hawkeye, in an
editorial in reference to the action
of the Pennsylvania Legislattnc
which passed an act compelling
hotels and restaurants that used
oleomargarine on their tables-, to
display the notice, "Imitation but
ter used here,1' but which -was ve
toed by the Governor, thus:
Are we ready lor this reform,
dearly beloved? Ir would be sor
row to our souls to go into the
store of the grocer we love and
trust, (and who likewise trusts us,)
and read here and there, and as
required by law, "This coffee is
half peas and the lost chicory."
"There is some .sand in this sugar."
"New maple sugar, five year.- old."
"Explosive kerosene oil." 'Adul
terated baking powder." uMierable
flour." It wouldbedishearteniugbut
some of us-would have to come to j
it. Are the merchants of America,
those most estimable men, ready
to placard their sliow windows and
counters with decorative embel- j
lishments as would be required J
under the oleomargarine law?
"Highest prices charged here that
the customer will stand." "This

Why, there are butchers who j
would have to label their goods
"eight-year-old spring lamb."
"Thibeef was sun-struck." "This
ox worked fifteen years in double
harness." "Porter-house steak cut
between the horns." "Tough old
mutton.'
You see, brethren, there is so
much oleomargarine in the world. I
outside of hotels and boarding j
houses, and it isn't all put on the j
table, nol even in the hotel, be-'
cause often it happens the clerk's
diamond pin is olemargarine. There
are oleomargarine doctors, there
are at very long intervals, we
thankfully say, oleomargarine
preachers, and here is Col. Inger-
soll running up and down the world 1
crying an oleomargerine religion
without its proper label. There
are oleomargarine reformers, there
are oleomargarine teachers. Everv
where, in the counting room, in
the school house, in the capitol,
even in the church, and we say it
with sorrow, in politics. See David
Davis' party, if you don't believe
it. In the sanctum once in a great
while, we find the imitation close
beside the real. As Tom Moore
sung, j
"Some flowers ot Eden we still inherit !
But there's oleomargerine over them all."
You see, brethren, this reform i.
too previous. We can't label our
selves and our goods and our
prices just as they are on such
short notice. We want a little
time for preparation, a little time
to straighten things up, to adjust
and equalize matters, until at last
our consciences can label every
line of goods we keep on our
shelves, in our brain and in our
hearts, and we can let tne public
come in and read what they see,
with no self-acusing and rebuking
blushes mantling our cheeks. Let
the Pennsylvania Legislature go a
little slow with this bill. Some of
the members are scarcely ready to
be labeled.
