The Opium Habit.
Statistics show that the opium
habit in this country is fast becom
ing a national vice. In 1871, 37,
S24 lbs of opium were imported,
valued at 353,334; in 1SS0, 77,
19G lbs were imported, valued at
j73,?9G. The indulgence of the
habit among the sexes is vastly
disproportional, ten men smoking
it to the one woman who becomes
the slave of the body and soul
destroying drug. Some smokers
have been known to consume
three ounces in a single day, and
the chronic 'fiends' will, it is al
leged, dispose of a pound and a
quarter in the same space of time.
Smokers prefer the opium dens to
their own rooms, partly because
the pipes in the dens are so thor
oughly impregnated with opium
by their constant use that they
seem to have a more decided effect
than less frequently used pipes;
and partly for the sake of the com
panions sure to be found there.
Opium smoking does not always
produce stupefaction; nor even
indeed sleep. Moderate indulgence
is said to produce a feeling of per
fect contentment and happiness,
and of complacency with the world
and all it surroundings. Life
seems replete with the brightest
prospects, and the most cherished
hopes seem on the point of being
realized. But after a time the
pleasurable sensation disappears
and the unfortunate viotiin only
smokes to stifle the the terrible
sufferings that abandonment of the
practice entails.

public property, and cannot object
to their conduct being most closely

and the balance of the people re
quired to pay fare? Fie can give
but one honest answer, that is:
'I am expected some way in my
orflioial position to be of service to
the company equal in value, at
least, to the amount of fare my
pass represents."1 Servants of the

and faithfully discharge their trust.
An eminent jurist of Portland
was asked why he did not go to
the capital on some occasions
mentioned, the inquirer remarking,
'yon have a free pass and it will
eos you nothing.' The jurist
answered: 'While -1 was on the
bench l was furnished a pass with
out asking for it, and when I went
out of ofliee my pass was lateen up
without even consulting me on
the subject." Thus with feuch
favoix, corporations largely influ
ence the conduct ol public servants
to the great injury of the people.
The peoph should vote traveling
expenses to their servants and
then punish severely every one
who could be tampered with to
the extent of accepting a pass."
