en Pftiilt r. .Istoria, Oregon. Sunday Morning November 6, 1881. No. 32. Vol. xv r. TELLING THE TRUTH. j "You can't live three hours audi tell the exact truth throughout that time without getting yourself into -trouble," said a gentleman; to me a few days since. I didn't flush, though I fell like so doinjr; but soon recovered suf ficiently to retort tersely, "Don't judge all men by yourself." A provoking grin o vet spread his features as he said, "I repeat it; should you follow such a course you would be a lit subject for a lunatic asylum before night," and then he cooly explained: First he mollified my troubled spirit by say ing that he regarded me as the emblem of veracity, and when I murmured, "You flatter me," re iterated his belief. Hut the idea he wished to convey was that no person could express the dictations of their own conscience without involving themselves in a scrape before long. He had never tried the experiment himself but would be pleased to have me do so. Oh, would he? f wiped? Well, I de clined, lint the iion of insinua tion had entered my soul and 1 se cretlv resolved iast week i at tempt it for my own edification. The momentous day for the test dawned brightly and all went smooth for the first half hour after rising, since T had no one to talk to, but ns T went down to the breakfast table T girded myself with the invisible but effective ar mor of caution. I wa very leti cent on all subjects; so much so that my manner excited comment. AVas I well? Yes. Vas anything the matter? No. Had 1 reason for keeping quiet? Yes. "What was it? "None of their business, Could they help me? Yes, by keeping still. And so, self-isolated,! gulped my coffee in solemn silence. But J didn't lie through out; that meal. Fearing the consequences of re maining at home, I started for a stroll, but after a short walk T saw approaching me the very person whom I would then wish to avoid for a few hours Miss Lively. Woman-like she is both garrulous and fond of compliments. Know ing her feminine failing in this re spect 1 am always lavish with my encomiums on her appearance, manner, speech, etc., dropping many a little white lie during a short conversation with her. Now was the test. With a mere saluta tion I attempted to pass, but she- was not in a hurrv, and brought ,jrht me to a standstill with the roimn and query: uStop! Arn't you glad to see me?" For a moment, in a rush of thought, I forgot all else but my 1 avowed adherence to the truth, I stammered: "I'm not glad to meet you just now," and then with a hasty "Excuse me," T hurried off, leaving her to go straight to my home and question as to my sanity. A little further on I met 13ob. He noticed ray flushed appearance and enquired as to the cause. "Oh, I'm bored too much; talked to death," I said; and would you believe it, Bob, my bosom friend, went off in a huff. I now began to meditate; but while 1 was mus ing the fire burned. Only about one-half the allotted time had ex pired, and I had as yet confined my assertions to the strictest truth. But whither could I go to avoid coming in contact with the curious and questioning mankind? I had it: I would seek the seclusion which the woodland grants. T would spend the remaining hours where surely I would meet with no interruption. No sdoner had I entered the quiet forest, however, than, as though the fates were against, I met two more lady friends who were gathering mosses. I immediately felt a presentiment that failure was at hand. I could not avoid conversation, but trusted to the utility of monosyllabic an swers to earn me safely beyond the breakers into which I had un wittingly deified. fll 11 1.. .. ......,-i'.,.. 1 i lO.smiK or evaue a ijuvaiiwn i could not conscientiously deem to ' be fair, and so when, after a few ! amon-place remarks, one of the common ladies asked, 'Why were you not nt Mrs. FV. reception last night?" T quietly replied: "1 didn't wish to cro." Why not? and many other questions followed in consequence of fearless answers, and o in less than ten minutes I had deliveied an opinion anything but compli mentary to Mrs. P., hei husband and many of their guests. Of course all this was carefully noted in the min(K of the fair ones to whom I wns talking, and of course Mrs. P. knew of it :i few hours later, as did also all the other uarties concerned, and 1 may add that the variatien: made in my ui.ii hit i.iii.iHtiii. iim original story bv their informant di.f nor temfto pacify them.
