The great Yellowstone valley is only the real beginning of the great Northwest land. Imagine if you can a valley which would reach in a straight line almost from Philadelphia to Chicago, which is as wide as the Chester valley, and in many places quite as fertile. Starting west from Olenclivc we follow up the Yellowstone river, along the eastern bank of which is built the Northern Pacific rail road for a distance of thirty-seven miles from Glendive. llere we come to the terminus of O'Fal lons creek. The track is being laid west at the rate .of one and a half miles per day, and the winter terminus of the great road will probably be at Foit Keough this winter. The Yellowstone valley about O'Fafron's is broad aid fer tile, a number of new ranches having been opened during the past summer. Twenty miles fur ther up the valley we come to the mouth of Powder river, which empties into the Yellowstone from the east side, and is over 3 30 miles Ions:. Corn, melons, canfeloupes, beets, potatoes, and, indeed,, all kinds of vegetables, were in the greatest abundance. There were 434 Indians in the vil lages, and all seemed contented and happy. The old Chief, White Bull, who was at work digging po tatoes, said to me: "We want to live like the white people and be come farmers. My people are willing to work, but we labor at a great disadvantage, being so poor. If I only had some strong oxen and plows to break up the land with, we -would soon become rich and independent. Our ponies are too weak to draw the plows we have throsgh the land, and Ave are compelled to dig by hand which is slow work. Corr. Philadelphia Press. Entry of Coal Lands. Secretary Kirkwood last week rendered a decision upon the entry of coal lands near railroads and the proper prices. The Situation in Russia. Our correspondent in St. Peters burg Inst week sent us lull details of the important State trial which is about to take place in that city. Four Nihilists who have already been in ption untried for eighteen months, are to be indicted for treason, the ovelt act having been the printing of a revolutionary paper called the Black Division.
