The tepotter went down to interview that gentleman, but the official that was standing guard said that no one wan allowed to see hint. According to a statement made before the Woman Suffrage Conven tion, there are two hundred and twenty-five women taxpayers in Portland, one hundred and twenty of whom voted at the last school election. On account of the bad weather and overflowing iiver, work was stop ped on the railroad at Independence, Polk county, and on Thursday the last locomotive with a long line of dump cars steamed away to Portland. The Guard reports that George E. Strong, formerly editor of the Oregonian, but Jately engaged in the practice of law at Lakeview, was lost in the mountains last week, since which time nothing has been heard of him. A Nehalem valle' correspondent writes that any one who is looking for a permanent home, a suitable location, would do well to visit that section. In his opinion it is the best valley m Oregon for raising grain, vegetables, or stock. Official notification has beeu re ceived that the fog bell on Race Rock" Light, Straits- of San Juan cle Fuca, was, on September 18th, replaced by a 12-ihch steam fog whistlo, sounding blasts of u seconds duration, with inter vals of 1 minute 12 seeonds between blasts. Mr. T. J. Alley invites all friends of temperance, young and old, to meet at 4 o'clock next Sunday afternoon in the Presbyterian church; there will be interesting exercises, temperance speeches, etc. Ue wishes that all having Band of Hope rituals would bring them. A Washington Territory subscrib er writes, asking if the price of The Weekly Astoriav is 2 or $3 a year. That depends: If we send him the paper aril trust him for a year, and wait till he sells his grain or shears his sheep we shall expect three bright trade dollars; but if he will send two dollars in advance he will get the newsiest and cheapest paper in the state for the ensulug twelve months. The high character of the peiform ance Tuesday night was in no way lessened by the rendering of Collins' emotional drama "The New Magda len' last evening by the Litigant com bination. As the whilom fair .sinner but now repentant nurse, Miss Lin gard had ample nppot (unity to evince her histrionic talent, and the good sup port accorded her by the rest of the company was manifest in the fine ren dition of the entire play. The play is one of intense dramatic inlctvst and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience present. .Many of our citi zens weie desirous of seeing Miss Lin gardin Alixe. but engagements in the interior precluded any fuither .stay, though the tioupe may stop with us on their return. They leave this morning. Social. The social at Mrs. Shei loan's last Tuesday evening was an enjoyable affair, and the occasion one of "pleas ant remembrance to all present.
