Plagiarism.
Joaquin Milleu, in reply to a
charge of plagiarism, denies the
accusation in toto, and says, in re
ply to 2Jckee Rankin's assertion
thai he (Rankin) -wrote a certain
play and merely paid Miller for
the use of his name: "I find my
self in the position of one who,
when about to sit down to his
boiled joint, finds that a dog has
stolen it, has munched it out of
palatable shape, rolled it in the
mire and is claiming proprietor
ship. The exact result of such an
- incident is that morally the joint
is the man's, but actually, when he
comes to look at it, he doesn't care
to own it, nor to engage in a ca
nine' fight ,to prove that he ever
did."
The charge of plagiarism has
ceased to be the grave accusa
tion it was ten or fifteen years ago,
Men 'are realizing that, in general,
- there is nothing in it. Everyone
is an unconscious plagiarist; we
are all plagiarists in action, in
speech, some of us even in
' thought. Some people think; oth-
ers only think they think, and the
suppositional thinkers always pla
giarize from the real ones. From
early childhood to mature life
there goes on au unconscious ap
propriation of the thoughts, opin-
- ions and works of others. But
the plagiarism universally and
justly decried is the attempt to
wear plumes without winning
ithem; the wholesale plunder of
the. writings of others and the
attempt ofttimes successful to
make the public believe that such
plundered thought is the bona fide
.production of the literary pirate
it is this that all unite in denoun
cing; and yet, even in this respect,
t Jthere is a good deal of unintentional
appropriation which often looks
like plagiarism, but yet is not.
A pretty thought is like a pretty
woman; they both look best when
they are best dressed. It is nat
ural then for any one to try to ex
- press either orally or in writing
thought in the best possible ihape.

theikpremise; the deduction, the
reasoning is so exactly in accord
ance with his views On the subject
that he will be most likely in ex
pressing himself subsequently to
use the same argument, the same
jgeneral style of expression that
elicited his approval. It has been
said that imitation is the sincerest
-torm of flatter'. Flattery of that
nature, is not always appreciated
f Jhy'the one flattered. Then again,
there is what may be styled a
mental saturation. A minister,
- .for example, may read up on some
, topic and in the course of his re
marks be so imbued with the idea
and sentiment of his favorite au
thor as to use his exact language.
A writer in the same way. This
. is not plagiarism in the true aa
. ception of the term. If it is, then
Shakspeare, Milton, Byron, and
bothers on the roll of fame are the
most patent and shameless of plagiarists.

r- Of late years our nation has been
passing through a cycle of centen
nial celebrations. The years from
, 17.75 to 1781 formed the period of
"the seven 3-ears' battle with the
banded foes of freedom, and the
'Hundredth anniversaries of the
events of these eventful years which
commenced on "April 19th, 1875,
, at Concord Bridge, will culminate
next Wednesday at Yorktown.
"While liberty is loved and courage
gp honoredjjthe events whose mem-
sbryis thus celebrated 'will be re
raembered and their effects re
vered wherever the sentiments
tliat actuated them shall find an
affirmative echo. The surrender
of Lord Cornwallis involved more
, jthanthe independence of the
"United States. It vivified a prin
ciple that has been in active exist
ence ever since. Before that,
England's colonial policy was one
of conquest and subjugation, of
tyranny and coercion ; since then
it has in the main been one of
civilization and conciliation. Sol
fishucss has given way to justice,
and the crushing logic of bruto
force to the mutual rcquiescence
of the governing and the govorned.
Elaborate preparations have been
made to fittingly celebrate the
hundredth anniversarv of the York-
town surrender, but, happily it
can be said, with little of that vin
dictive feeling toward Eugland
that formerly characterized Ameri
can sentiment. Ever since the
Geneva Award there has been a
knitting of the bonds of sympathy,
a fraternal feeling exhibited on
both sides of the Atlantic that is as
it should be between the two fore
most nations of the world; nations
that are one in language, in senti
ment and in general intent. The
universal and hearty sympathy
manifested during the late national
sorrow has also tended to destroy
the old-time feeling of hostility,
and men say, and justly too, " Be
cause an English King was obsti
nate a hundred years ago, is that
any reason tliat we, to-day, should
hold an ancient grudge ?" So that
the proposition that the British
flag be appropriately saluted next
"Wednesday at Yorktown is a good
one, and indicative of the frame of
mind in which every one of the
great English-speaking and English-thinking
family throughout the
earth can justly look at the com
memoration of an event that was
inevitable in its causes, and im
mortal in its results.
The Rfekt Spirit.
"Oregon and Washington pro
ducers want government aid to
make good harbors and to clear
obstructions from all navijrable
rivers. If steamboats and barges
can go down to Astoria loaded
with wheat or wool, and there
load ships -waiting for them, that
answers the needs of production,
and if the Government has any
spare money for the purpose, we
require its expenditure to make
the entrance of the Columbia safe
and convenient for large vessels'
The above from the Willamette
Farmer is, or should be the shib
boleth of all the Columbia Basin.
United efforts and truthful state
ments will accomplish that which
must redound to the benefit of
the entire Northwest.

nual convention of the Oregon
State Woman Suffrage association
will convene at Portland for a
four days' session.
The Omaha Republican sadly
announces the fact that "another
dry Sunday is upon us." Can't
