Wrangel Land.
Under date of August lCtli3
John Muir, the celebrated scientist
of this coast, writes from the Cor
win off Point Barrow, that this
new territory had been taken
formal possession of in the name of
the United States. This mysteri
ous country has long been a prob
lem to geographers. Sixty years
ago, Admiral "Wrangel, of the Rus
sian navy, cruised an entire sum
mer looking for that icy continent,
but unsuccessfully. In 1819, Keller,
a German navigator, saw the land
but could not get to it, but now
since Capt. Hooper has succeeded
in effecting a landing, it may be
considered a part of our domain,
though what practical good it is,
would be hard to say. The land
ing was effected in latitude 71
degrees; longitude 178 degrees.
No trace of the Jeannette was
. found, nor of any human inhabi
tant. The beach was well tracked
with polar bears, but none of the
party could discover any sign of
reindeer or musk oxen, though the
country seems to abound in the
kind of food they require. A
single fox track was observed, and
some of the burrows of a species
of marmot, also a few birds and
about twenty species of plants,
most of them in bloom. The rock
is ciay slate, which weathers
smoothly, and is "covered with a
sparse growth of mosses, lichens
and flowering plants, not unlike
that of the adjacent coasts of Si
beria and Alaska.
If anything pleasing could be
said to have marked the sad rites
witnessed throughout the United
States on the 26th ult., it was the
mournful intermingling of the Han
cock and English aud Garfield and
Arthur clubs in many cities, in
their uniforms as they appeared
in the stirringj campaign. Such
magnanimity on the part of the
political opponents of the dead
President goes far toward taking
the sting out of politics. It shows
rin a strong and suggestive light
'the beauty of our political sys
tem, whose party antagonism finds
no expression in the death of a
President. It signifies that the
resident is the chief executive of
he whole peqple, and not of any
rty or faction thereof. From
the TOoment our President fell Be
fore the assassin's pistol to the end
of the mournful ceremonies that
. - consigned his mortal remains to
the tomb, the commiseration and
"sympathy of the democratic party
. was as unfailing and genuine as if
it had been a President of their
choice, and not Garfield, who had
fallen. This is well. Its influ-
ence orer both of the great politi
cal parties of the nation will be
most salutary. It will teach us
that hardest of all lessons to learn
charity. .
g' By this time it is.pretty well es
tablished that Arthur will reorgan
ize the cabinet to suit himself at
least; for it is evident that if he
has no enemies to punish, he at
least, has some friends that he
wants to reward. The cabinet of
a deceased President, in accord
ance with an invariable etiquette,
unite in tendering their resigna
tions to the incoming President,
t and.it has been the uniform rule
for "the new President to decline
these resignations, at least for a
season; but a reorganization of the
cabinet has so far alwaj-s followed
the accession of a Vice President,
rarely or never on cordial terras
yrith ,tlie advisers of his prede
cessor.

winter, so will New Mexico, and
the inhabitants of Southern Da-
Tcota are in hopes that they will
