o; gfte atta stefcrn. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY OCT. 1, 18B1 J. F. HALLORAX Editor. Salutatory. In assuming charge of Tiik As touian we desire first to express our thanks for the congratulations and expressions of good will with which we have been favored, and hope that none of our friends will ever have reason to utter contrary expressions. Tt is our intention to edit a newspaper, a reflex of the great and busy world in which we live, and to that end shall endeavor to gain and hold the good wishes and esteem of the entire commu nity. The Astoiiian shall be inde pendent in what we deem the true sense of the word. It shall have ati opinion on all points within the jurisdiction of a newspaper, shall hold to what it believes to bs right, and shall answer all ob jections by slating the truth as it appears to us. It shall, as far as possible, avoid all personali- lies, shall try to be- just, and shall le always willing to concede to nthers the consistency that it claims for itself. "We do not expect to fagree with everyone, but what is 'said shall be so said that it not only can be understood but that it cannot be misunderstood, and in such a wav that those who differ from us can at least respect the opinions uttered. The paper shall work for the good and material benefit of the city, county, state 'nation, shall foster and en gage every enterprise looking he advancement of the general fterests of the community with 'horn we live and to whom we iiooic lor supporr, ana snail auvo- t f i i 11 i 'cate the legitimate development and prosecution of Astoria's re sources and the rijrhts that her position demands. It is our in m to edit a paper that shall be clean in sentiment, utterance and effcc, that shall be a welcome visitor to every family, to every reading man and woman that cares to have the news of the day in a readable shape, and shall endeavor to be accurate and reliable in all statements made. We shall be chary of promises, but shall try to do all that shall be promised, bear ing in mind that while it is not al ways possible to secure success, it ij. always noble to deserve it. Whatever is copied from other papers shall be duly credited, and our columns shall always be open to .anyone who has anything to say on any question of public im port or general welfare. The Nez Perce News suggests that when Air. Villard gels to AValla Valla, it would be a sensi ble idea for the merchants of each of the towns in the upper country to send a representative to inter view him on the subject of reduc ing freights and to make known O 0 to him the hardships and disad vantages - under which they labor in the matter of delinquent lroirhts. With reversed column rules comes every exchange clad in somber habiliments; all with eulo gistic phrase, a sober symphony of sorrow for the dead. The monu ment fund is assuming gigantic proportions, and yet a fairer shrine and more fitting statue shall be found in the regretful remem brance and hallowed memory that fills the heart of every member of the human family that knows of the sad event. Ex-President Hayes is quoted by the Cleveland Herald as say-inn-: "Mv life was threatened many times. T have a large pack age of letters labeled 'Threats of Assassination,' but I frequently walked alone, for exercise, around several squares in "Washington, and faced boldly, on all occasions where danger was expected, against the advice of others. The ushers would generally detect lazy persons and turn them away, but one morning a man came to me and demanded a deed for the land of the Pacific Railroad, and had -to be put out." It is not generally known, says the Alta California, that, acccord ing to a law on the statute books, any citizen may subscribe to a Government publication by notify ing the Government Printer at an early date. I f any person desiring extra copies of any document printed at the Government Print ing office by authority of law shall, previous to its being put to press, notify the Congressional Printer of the number of copies wanted, and shall pay to him, in advance, the estimated cost thereof, and ten per cent, thereon, the Con gressional Printer may, under the direction of the Joint Committee on Public Printing, furnish the same. Tiik Pomeroy Independent is our authority for the statement that a series of magnetic observa tions have been made in Pomeroy within the past few days by Capt. James Lawson, Assistant in the Coast and Geodetic survey, for the purpose of determining accurately the variations of the compass. These observations are of differ ent kinds declination, deflections, oscillations and dip. "Work of this kind is now being extended all over the United States. On the Pacific side it has been carried into Nevada and Utah, along the coast southward to the Gulf of Califor nia and is now being done from Alaska to San Francisco. Mr. Lawson's operations began at Jacksonville, Oregon and contin ued through to Portland and Astc ria. A scries of stations has been occupied from Ainsworth to Lake Pen d' Oreille. Capt. Lawson goes by way of "Walla "Walla, thence by various stations down the Columbia river to Ivalama, and to Puget sound, closing his labors for the season at Port Towsend.
