But very few people, when they
see the bamboo growing in the
luxurious gardens of Mr. S. Gr.
Reed and. otliqrs in Portland, will
give the matter more than a pass
ing thought, but there is in it very
much for suggestive ideas. When
we look upon a stalk of bamboo,
growing in Oregon, we at once
think of that distinguished Ore
nian, Judge O. N. Denny, who was
transplanted a few years since in
China, and we are reminded of the
very many and great advantages
he has proven to be to China, and
o the favors he has extended to
his own beloved Oregon. The ex
periment of growing the bamboo
in Oregon is of course an experi
ment, but as Cap. Humphreys
would remark: "We begin to
experienced that we must ex
perience;" as we look upon it.
Then again to quoto the Albany
Senator (not Conkling nor Piatt),
with reference to Asteria: AC It is
the longest town I ever saw." So
with the bamboo, it is the tallest of
grasses. We would not bamboo
zle anybody by referring to it, but
we do feel a pride in the facts, as
stated by the Standard, which
says: "Two of the bamboo plants
sent here by Consul Denny from
China were planted in the grounds
of Mr. S. G. Reeds residence.
They have each sent up shoots
which at present are nearly three
feet in hight, but do not look very
thrifty. It is hardly probable that
this plant, the largest species of
grass; will, even if able to with
stand our winters, ever attain its
growth here. In its native soil it
is one of the most rapid-growing
grasses known, attaining a hight of
twenty feet and a circumference
of ten inches in two months. From
its lightness, toughness and elsis
ticity it is invaluable to the east
ern countries, supplying the place
of the eak, pine, ash, etc. From
it they construct their houses,
fences and gates, their chairs and
lounges, spars and masts for their
ships, and crafts for fishing. From
the shoots, they form tobacco pipes
and from the larger ones opium
,pipes, and even pipes for convey
ing water. The tender shoots are
eaten as asparagus and ma'de into
pickles and preserves. In seasons
of scarcity a coarse bread is made
from the seeds. The leaves are
steeped for medicine, and salves
and ointment made from the roots.
It is used as a switch to punish
him in childhood and applied as
a bastinado on his punishment in
riper years, in fact from infancy to
old age, the oriental man and the
bamboo are inseparable compan
ions, and without it he sinks into
degradation and poverty."
Lewiston is going to get into
the ring of the opponents of Vil
lards syndicates, by threatening to
do a big thing themselves in the
way of railway construction. We
hope they may win, but a hundred
million dollars is a big pile for a
short limbed community to strad
dle. "Win. Reid has sold his interest
in the Salem Flouring mills and
resigned his position as President.
Hon. Ashel Bush of Salem has
been elected to succeed him. Mr.
Bush is a live, enterprising and
industrious business man, and
what ever he entersintois sure-of'
success. Salem is again likely to
have the head of its largest in
dustry at home.
Gen. Mart. V. Brown, former
proprietor of the Albany Demo
crat, now at the Lower Soda
springs, is gradually wasting away
with consumption. His left lung
is now entirely useless and an ab
cess is forming on the right lung
and when it breaks he will prob
ably pass away. His time is very
short for this world, and he is fully
aware of his condition, but does
not seem to dread the final end.
His wife is nearly worn out with
weary- watching, but feels very
thankful to all kind friends who
have given her assistance in her
Tiour of need.
The comet has died away into the
etherial regions so far as to be almost
hid from view, and in a few days more
it will pass away to be viewed by won
dering eyes no more, "until the year

The Standard says: "It is re
ported that the steamer Columbia was
quarantined on, account of a case of
hmall-pox on board. The party af
flicted with this disease was said to
have been taken at Astoria." The
name of this man, as we learn from a
San Francisco dispatch, was 0. B.
Andrews. We have made diligent in
quiry, but cannot find out from
whence he came. He might have
come from Puget-sound, or a thou
sand other places; we are quite sure
he never lived at Astoria, and we
hope that Capt. Van Oterendorp and
Mr. Prescott will aid us in finding
who the man is, who aro his friends,
where he did live, etc.
