The Washington territory pilot
commissioners, at Ilwaco yesterday,
issued, branches to pilot on the bar to
Jas. E. Campbell and Thos. Doig.
Fred Wilkin, fishing for the Pil
lar rock canneiy, pipked up 200 fathom
of one of Joseph Humes nets, just
above Barneys point, on Thursday
night.
Business was almost entirely sus
pended and nearly everybody in Port
land attended the races on Thursday.
Why not? The finest thoroughbreds
were contesting.
Capt. Hamhns little throe year
old girl, referring "to the late arrival
in tho family, thinks he will make her
a good brother, but says there is no
beauty about him.
The Young Mens Western band
of Astoria elicited much favorable
comment as they paraded the streets
last evening, performing some of their
best selections. They attended the
fair.
Mr. F. B. Hull, of Grays river,
reports everything promising in that
locality, and people are hopeful for
the railroad to Astoria. If they can
not have it for themselves they would
rejoice to meet it here.
- Mir. Trenchard returned from
Portland yesterday. He informs us
that Mr. Hatch, of Portland, bought
he Mary Taylor. It is not determined
what Mr. Hatch will do with her.
She may probably come back on the
Columbia river bar.

Opening of the Fair.
The Fair W tho benefit of St.
Marys Hospital opened, last evening
under very fvorabfe auspices. The
booths kept By theWifFerent ladies are
beautifully ecorafcd, and we have no
doubt wille a financial success. The
fair will cjmtinue'mtil Saturday night,
August 0th.
Business in the City.
We are glad to report that business
in the city is looking up. Our stores
are all rushed with prudent classes of
fishermen who are buying their fall
outfits. We hope tliat it will continue
so for some lime. Our merchants all
have as good stocks to select from as
any merchants on the coast, and when
a man has saved his money he will find
that he can get full value for it in
Astoria, in purchase of goods equal to
any in stock at Snn Francisco or Port
land. The Last Day.
The hiBt of a large consignment of
dry goods will be sold in Astoria to
day. .Nearly two months ago F. L.
Drew, of San Francisco, shipped
$40,000 worth ofdry gfods to Port
land, being a consignment from his
brother-in-law, .teromoli 'ell, one of the
largest importtf-s of New York. A
small remaining portion from Portland
was shipped to Astoria hist week, and
has met with wonderfully
sales; but afew goods remain
quick
which
will be sold out clean this day.
The doors will be thrown open -at
8 a. m. fur private sale. A clean
sweep will be made of everything, in
cluding shelving, counters, show cases
and empty dry goods cases. Auction
will be held at 2 and 7:00 v. m.
The Steamship Umatilla.
The new steamship Umatilla, built
for the Oregon Improvement company,
i3 now taking in her stores at Brook
lyn, New York, for this port. She
will sail to-morrow, in conimaud of
Capt. Worth. A dispatch says she is
built entirely of iron, and although of
enormous size her lines are symmetri
cal throughout. He length is 325 feet
and she has a tonnage of o()00. She
is equipped with direct acting com
pound engines, with a nominal horse
power of 5,000. Has fore and aft
rigging, and steering apparatus oper
ated by stoam, and electric lights.
The officers quarters and accommoda
tions for passengers are of the best
and finest character, and the crew are
also well provided for. The Umatilla
is among the best of American built
ships. She will call in at Rio and
thon pass through the straits of Ma
gellan, and around to the PaciGc,
stopping at Valparaiso on her north
ward journey. Her cargo consists
almost entirely of railway supplies.
- Uov. Thayer has appointed Hon.
Geo. L. Curry, of The Dalles, and
Glenn O. Holmau, of Baker city,
notaries public for Oregon.
Mr. H. A. Shaw, of Deep river,
was in the city yesterday. Deep river
settlement is growing with the balance
of the surrounding country, and there
are many good claims there yet to be
taken. There is but very little desert
land in that part of the country.
Birdie Anderson, jrrand-son of
our friends Capt. Jas. Strang and W,
H. Anderson, of Portland, took in The
Astokian office yesterday in company
with his chaperon, Mr. O. P. Tomp
kins, and entertained us for an hour
or so. Come again Birdie.
According to the advertisement
in the Orcgonian, which we quote to
day, tho Los Angles will call in at As
toria on or about Wednesday next for
Sitka freight. The business of Asto
ria with Sitka has become a very con
siderable item, and we should dislike
very much to see it ignored.
A trip to The Dalles at this sea
season is a very enjoyable one if the
traveler is content with tho slow time
made by the boats and can stand the
warm weather. Beyond the Cascades
the line of the railroad is constantly in
view and an idea of the greatness of
the undertaking fully felt. A few
mile? if track is laid and a locomotive
is constantly employed in moving cSrs
of material to the front
An article in tho Daily a few
days since, entitled Our Lovely Cli
mate, should have read lively. To
illustrate: Yesterday foronoon when
the bell-man took hold of the rope at
the Congregational church to call the
people together for the picnic, the
weather was all that could be desired,
but before he got a stroke out of that
clapper it was raining. That 's what
we should call lively weather; don't it.
Hon. F. J. Taylor, T. X. Strong
Esq., and Mr. J. T. White took to
the woods on a hunting expedition on
the 24th, returning on Wednesday.
One day duritig their travels they
espied a pair of beautiful deer and
gave chase, coming upon a couple of
elk, which they followed to the top
most peak of Saddle mountain. Both
elk were killed, and one of them e
cured, the other one fell ovcrthe cliff
into the abyss below and was lost.
Elk meat is verv nice now.
