Tlie Oregon Monopoly.
Discussing the scheme set forth
by Mr. Villard in his remarks at a
meeting of representative men at
St. Paul a few (las ago, which is
much the largest in its scope of
any yet attempted in the history of
railroad undertakings, embracing,
as it does, a through line from the
great lakes to the Pacific ocean,
supported by an extra system of
branches throughout Oregon,"Wash
ington, Idaho, Montana, Dakota
and Minnesota, and extending
northward into the British terri
tory, taking in the entire North
ern Pacific scheme; and proposing
to extend it till the main line and
branches penetrate all parts of the
vast country which can be devel
oped by the system; embracing all
that was originally mapped for the
Oregon Railway and Navigation
company, with the addition of lit
eral lines and branches; and finally,
including the Oregon and Califor
nia company with its western Ore
gon roads and their extension to
proper connection with the rail
way system of California, and the
city of San Francisco, the Orego
nian says:
It is a vast and comprehensive
plan, and appears to be backed by
a force that rendets its success
entirely certain. t will be seen
at once that it is no visionary un
dertaking, as capital enough is
already known to be embarked in
it to put it through. It is doubt
ful whether any other part of the
field covered by the plans em
braced in this prodigious under
taking will realize the changes and
general consequences to follow it
in an equal degree with Oregon
and Washington. No other part
of the field needs this development
so much, has waited so long for
it or is so entnely dependent upon
it. Alone of ail the states and
territories Oregon and Washington
are still without railway communi
cation with other parts of the
country. We are the last to be
brought into connection with the
general railway system of the
whole United States. But in
some quarters objection begins now
to'be made that we are to be at the
mere' of a monopoly. What have
we expected? A great corpora
tion is now at work in our midst.
For twenty-live years we have
waited, striven and hoped for the
very work this corporation is now
doing. It is a big corporation, of
course. It commands enormous
capital. But no small corporation
could accomplish what it has un
dertaken. No small aggregation
of capital would suffice. In the
nature of things it is a monopoly
too. Occupying the place it does,
and carrying on operations on so
vast a scale, it could not be any
thing else. t is a monopoly be
cause nqbody else is likely to raise
or combine one hundred millions
of money for competition with it;
and if such a thing could be done,
then neither undertaking could be
made to pay any return on invest
ment so great. But people who
consider the whole situation are
not going to permit themselves to
be worried by this bugbear of mo
nopoly. It may be supposed that
they foresaw the whole situation
when they were so anxious to have
the great undertakings which this
corporation now has in hand be
gun and pushed through. If there
be any who did not foresee it, they
were singularly blind to most ob
vious consequences. There would
seem to be little propriety in hav
ing waited and labored so long for
this very work, to turn about now
and begin to distress ourselves
with anticipations of-dire conse
quences from it.
The Kansas colony have located
near Whatcom, Pusret-sound.
A private dispatch from H. V.
Boyntou, Washington, asserts em
phatically that the President is all
right-
Seattle has had thirteen cases of
small pox landed there in two years
and still no epidemic. Good treat
ment. The infernal machines were con
signed to one Joseph Evans., Liv
erpool, by one Charles Mills, Bos
ton. Neither have been appre
bended.
, Hon. Elisha Allen, the Hawaiian
minister at Washington, asserts
that King Kalakua does not wish
to sell his birth-right for a mess of
potash, nis tour is from liberal
curiosity, and for enlightened pur-
poses.
Mr. Stedmans Grst essay on Poe
try in America, a subject too little
treated by American critics; will ap
pear in" the August 'Scribner. It is
part of the new work "projected by Mr.
Stednrm on the poets and poetry of
t, and treats of the relations of

wholesale house of Hecht, Aiken
& Co., started for his old home in

city his father is a leading banker.
Martin came to Portland seven
years ago and commenced busi
ness on 30,000, given him by his
paternal relative. He refused to
accept this money as a gift but
kept it as a loan and paid it back
with interest at six per cent per an
num. Besides leaving the state
without owing a dollar Mr. Hecht
carried with him 75,000, profits
on his business since his arrival in
Portland in 1874. He was a gen
erous young man, not 3et aged
twenty-eight years, and gained
the respect and confidence of all
with whom he had either social
or business relations."
