&Agootl advertiser i)artlctuarlj
puts his show-windows into tin' news
paper. 3rMost people "take a, look at the
advertisements.' If they read tln-o of
other people, Why will they not see
voitrs?
.2rls costs less to print advertise
ments than to send out salesmen. A
good advertisement Is seen and leait by
more people in one day, than most .miIus
men caill on in a year.
yE-Cr-Aii advertisement tells its own
slo'rv. It makes no mistakes, as a soliei
tor might do, and states exactly what
the merchant wants to say, neither nioie
nor lass. Advertisements are honest
and faithful servant..
j2r"Do hogs pay?"3ks an agrcnl
tural correspondent. We know ofMiine
tnar don't. They subscribe for a jmper,
lead it Torn few years for nothing, and
then send it back to the publisher with
theP.M. inscription, refused.' Sueh
hogs as that pay nothing to anybod,if
tliey can help it,
.Kit-1 'Goods speak for themselves,"
"but it is only after they are bought that
they can do so. An object in advert is
ing'is to iuduec people to buy them ami
le.-t them. Jf goods speak for them
selves, a good advertisement may also
speak for the goods.
.Kir.Soine men can see things only
retrospectively. Instead of looking for
ward to what they might do they only
look back to what they might have done.
They learn from experience, after it has
become a little late in the day. Sueh
men are the non-ad vertisers. "1'ook
farmeis' were once despised by the M:lf
called 'practicai" farmers, but when the
latter saw the former's crops, they
changed their minds.
2&- 1 am doing a good enough
business without advertising. No doubt
you are doing well enough for your pres
ent needs, but do you forget the panics,
the exciting elections, the times of war
or pestilence, or any of those manv
causes which create dull terms of bust
ne.sh '.' These must be calculated for and
discounted if you would bridge them
over. One must make more than he
needs, to make a fortune, and advertis
ing is a powerful auxiliary in money
making. p&f'Sso man should deprive Iiis wife
and family of a good local paper.
They do not get out from home to learn
the news as does the husband and father,
and the paper serves to relieve the other
w ise lonely house of his absence. It is
the worst possible enconomy to deprive
I ho family of a pleasure so easilv and
cheaply procured. And yet there are
those who say that the' are too poor to
la ice a paper; but they are not to poor to
spend twenty times the price of a paper
every day for whisky and tobacco.
