Condition of the .President.
Again the Presidents condition
shows decided improvement- The
alarm of the past two or three
days, based on apprehensions otj
most serious consequences from
his relapse, appears to have sub
sided, or at least to have given
way to the impression that there
is no immediate danger. Every
one must see, however, that the
Presidents condition is .till a most
critical one.
The Mexican Horror.
Details of the Morelos railway
casualty in Mexico are at hand in
correspondence. A gentleman who
escaped from the wreck of the
first car said to the correspendent:
Dantes description of hell conveys
but a faint idea of the horrors I wit
nessed. The thunder-peals seemed
to me like the voice of an inexor
able fate. The fortunes of that
doomed mass of human beings
were made so distinct, first by
the flames of the alcohol, and
afterwards bv "the flashes of
lightning, that my soul sick
ened. I managed to clamber up
the sides of the ravine, and
could only pray: "Christ pity
them;" then I fainted. Xo guard
had been stationed at the bridge,
nor even had a lamp been placed
there; the heavy freshet had
brought down the debris which
had pressed against the two piers
and carried them off; the headlight
of the engine shone only upon
the rails; which remained, and the
engineer being unable to see that
these steel threads were un
supported, the train instantly
plunged into the abyss, pre
cipitating its human freight
into the foaming water. The
ravine being narrow, the cars were
piled on each other, crushing and
mashing all. Then the eighty bar
rels of alcohol rolled out, many
breaking open as they fell; next
the lime poured over the victims,
and finally came an additional hor
ror. As the rear engine was
dragged into the ravine its live
coals fired the alcohol, and in a
few seconds this agonizing mass of
humanity was enveloped in flames.
Imagine their sufferings, in a
dreary place, far from an' human
habitation, and as the storm lud
prostrated the telegraph wires
there were no means of communi
cation with city or town; therefore
the victims remained several hours
without aid.
A Texas man who has been
traveling a great deal over the
country furnishes lite best defini
tion we have heard yet of the
average railroad eating-house. He
says it is a place where the train
stops long enough for a pious
looking man, who has been a
colonel, to collect a dollar from
each passenger for taking away
his appetite. That is a true bill.
"AVe should say so." The Brit
ish press, irrespective of politics,
and individual papers agree in ex
pressing the belief that England
can rely on the good faith of
America in endeavoring to pre
vent renewal of overt attempts of
conspirators against the British
government. No doubts about
that. Give us a hold of your
hand, Mr. Bull.
The report that Carl Schurz
writes editorials with one hand
while playing a fugue from some
old composer on the piano with
the other is the "weak invention of
an envious rival. And equally
untrue is the report that he sets
all his editorials to .music before
having them set in type, for the
purpose of making them tony,
All great men are lied about. "We
have been lied about ourself.
The matter of the vacancy in
the supreme bench caused byhe
death of Justice Clifford, causes
much discussion. Devens and
Chief Justice Gray of Massachu
setts, are candidates, and every
New England state will havo one
or more candidates, and it is as
sumed that the judge will be ap
pointed from there. The talk of
appointing Cockling is regarded
as absurd, and liia friends say that
he would'nt have it. Sbme prom
inent republicans hold that a dem
ocrat should be appointed, and
tkisk GarJUld will appoint one.
