m gto Snife gstocintu ASTORIA. OREGON : 1 SUUDAY. ....JULY 24, 1881 I.C.IRELAND. .Editor. Plenty of Water. An artesian well Is now in oper ation on the old soap hole flat, Wasco county, which throws a continuous stream about twenty five feet high. Prof. Hurley bored down by the side of one of the boap holes to a depth of 219 feet, findinjr nothing1 but that curious mud which created such an excite ment a few years ago, and when the boring ceased the -water spout ed from the hole, and keeps it up constantly. Can any one give a good reason why a flowing well should not be bored in or near Astoria? The mountains are full of springs, and all the creeks and streams which flow to the ocean have their sources in them. In many springs that have been dug large veins of water hare been found which rose for some distance above the point at which they were tapped. The present supply in many cases is sufficient to fill the wants of many families from one spring. The agony is over at Albany at last, and Congressman Lapham will take the seat vacated in the senate bv Mr. Colliding. The town of Colfax was nearly destroyed y fire on the 221. Losses $105,000. No fire depart ment. The fire was the work of an incendiary. x Mormons are working vigorously among the miners of the anthracite region for converts to the alleged religion of Joseph Smith. Their efforts are principally directed to the proselyting the Welsh. A number of rumors hare been in circulation icgarding the sud den disappearance of Henry T. Lewis, a clerk in the Anglc-Cali-fornian bank, San Francisco. It is now pretty well settled that he is a defaulter to the amount of about &G000, invested in fast horses and fast women. A storm did considerable datn :ip;e in Masachnsetls on the 22d. Lightiiiiig' struck in many places, htirniriir barns, killinir horses, shal- t-ering' flagstalFs, telegraph poles, trees, etc., and a large quantity of window glass was broken by Hying missiles and nail .stoiics. 1 lull a dozen prostrations of people are! reporrctt, out no iaiai cases. The wreck of a wild freight train on the Santa Fe road near Lawrence, Kansas, on the 22d, dis closes a bold plot to rob a passen ger train on which an express messenger had thirty or forty thou sand dollars in the safe. A shop near the track had been broken into and tools obtained with which to tear up the rails. The wild freight -went into the break. The employes of the branch of the Matanzas of the Spanish bank of Cuba fled on the 22d witli two accomplices on board a Spanish steamer, which one of the accom plices chartered under the pre tence that he intended to ship cat tle from Alvarado, Mexico. The employes robbed the office of $200,000 in specie. The bank officers say that the amount sto leii is not fully ascertained. The steamer left Matanzas on the 10th. Another severe storm in the northwest is reported. A Chicago dispatch of the 22d says: Several cases are reported of lightning striking in the city, but there was no great damage. Reports come in from all over the north west, showing that yesterday was intensely hot in most places and that the storm, when it came, was one of the most severe ever ex perienced; being a combination of lightning, thunder and heavy rain. Many cases of strokes b' lightning are mentioned and some disastrous. Two telegraph operators died at their work. The bamboo is one of the most rapidly-growing plants known. It has been known to grow eight inches in tvent'-four hours in the Kew Gardens, London, and in its native countries, the Malay Archi pelago and Southern Asia, it often reaches the bight of over one hun dred feet, and is from eight to twelve incites in diameter at the base. The natives of the East In dies find it a most valuable plant, and from it they make their bouses, household utensils, ornaments, and a thousand and one articles. In deed, without it they would find themselves in a very bad way. In the recent tournament on Coney island, sixteen thousand im mature, weak birds, that had been boxed up in close quarters for weeks with insufficient food and water, were killed. It has been estimated that the brutal and de moralizing exhibition cost some thing above $30,000. Itisgrati fving to learn that its managers lost money. Trap-shooting is not sport, in the manly sense of the word, and ought to be prohibited by law.
